Looking at buying a Tanaka motor off facebook marketplace. First of all can anyone identify it from the picture and point me toward a manual? Secondly the seller wants $50 for it. They were originally asking $100. The description states "Pulls over but hasn't been started in years. Ran good when put in storage." The seller said I can do a compression test on it. Is this worth messing around with? If so what else should I check besides compression? This would be the perfect motor for my canoe if I can get it to run.

Yes for $50 they are decent. Not all the parts are available but you’ll be able to make it run

I’ve been running Tanaka 3.0 since 1983 on my canoe…they are dead simple motors to operate and repair if needed….IF you can find parts.
For $50 go ahead and buy it….it’ll most likely run for years.

I just bought it for $50. It pulls easily and compression seems good. The spark plug is broken. What type of spark plug does it take? What mixture of gas? Is there anything I should do besides replace the spark plug before trying to start it? Anyone got a manual for this motor?

Don’t recall the plug number, but run 50:1 mixture….drain/ check/ refill lower unit with 80-90 marine gear lube. One screw removes carb…super simple with a needle valve/main jet set up….

Think my leaf blower uses the same mixture so I have some mixed already. From what I'm finding the spark plug is a rcj8. What do I need to do with the carb? Clean it? What's the best method to do that? Sorry for all the stupid questions. I don't work on small engines a lot. One more thing. Is this engine water or air cooled?

Air cooled motor….try to run it as is….clean carb later, if needed…
Tried to start it after sitting overnight with a full tank. It started for about a second then shut off and wouldn't start again. Looks like the fuel line from the gas tank is pinched off. I just noticed the circles ring in the exploded view I'm posting is missing so the tank is sagging down possibly causing the fuel line to be pinched. Do you know where I can get a replacement ring or something else that will hold the tank in place. Also do you know where I can get an air filter as it appears to be missing?

Replace all old fuel lines with some clear/ green colored lines from the chain saw store….also replace that pet- **** with a plastic, chain saw type.

Also, use some very small zip- ties/ tie-wraps to secure ends of fuel line in place of those little clip rings that are prone to corrosion….another item, a small in- line chain saw type fuel filter will keep junk out of your carb…

Also, no air filter on these motors….just that little plastic elbow type air intake to keep rain out of carb…

Is that the part you are saying I should replace? I'm assuming that is a fuel filter? I saw a plastic fuel filter at the hardware store that might work. Also I dont have a ring to support the fuel tank. Any suggestions for that? Sorry for the stupid questions. I am new to working on this type of engine.

I just realized there is a lever on that part. What position should it be in?

Looks like a screw on filter there…the lever should be on/ off…..your fuel set up is a bit different from my 3.0 model…

So I got new fuel lines on and gave it a pull and it ran for a second then stopped. It wont start again unless I spray carb cleaner into the carb then it still cuts out after a second. Any thoughts?
