    Idle issues

If all else fails, run a can of this stuff. It helped one I had issues with low idle. After I ran a can of tuner, it now idles nice and low. Johnson Evinrude OMC Engine Tuner

    Idle issues

Part 35 sometimes gets stuck inside the carb and could be damaged. If you haven’t already done so, inspect part 35 that little piece of plastic can get damaged or broken especially when soaking in carb cleaner etc. other than that, try hooking it up to a timing light when running and make sure...

    1972 evinrude 25hp sparkplugs

J6C run better on these than j4c. Stick with Champions and make sure they are gapped to spec. I have a 70,71,72 25hp Johnson and all run J6C. Also clean points every few months if it starts running like crap. Plugs are cheap, if they get fouled, replace.

    Idle issues

Did you do the carb link and sync? Do you have the idle adjustment screw set accordingly? When you said it dies when throttle down, I’m assuming it’s only running at high revs? Checked spark? Running on both cylinders? Low speed jet set to 1 1/2 turns at first then start adjusting once...

    1971 Johnson 25hp Outboard - 25R71S

Make sure the kill switch wires are not grounded or touching anything. I found a kill switch for cheap on eBay. Get a spark tester to check spark, one that you can adjust the gap. Lots of info online about these motors . I also have a 71 25hp Johnson. Loved it so much I picked up a 70 and 72...

Motor mounts worn on 72 25hp Johnson

Well almost done “restoring” a 72’ 25hp Johnson. The motor was a parts motor I picked up but decided it deserved a chance because it looked so clean and runs great. However, there is a lot of play especially on the front. The play is up and down and upon inspection, I noticed the front (side)...

Scott- I also googled. Look a bit closer at the two parts distributors that claim to have them in stock. One wants over 50$ to ship a set of points to California (ground shipping). The other wants 25$. I called EMP and they are currently out of stock and will only ship to a distributor who can...

    Best replacement point sets available

I’ve read few threads about the newer points not being made correctly and issues setting the timing with them, including OMC’s sets. I ran into this with one outboard I have. The new replacement OMC points I installed were incorrect and I ran into issues getting the points to open correctly. I...
