How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Never mind. I just did a little research and that chrome bore could be a real issue. Uhoh. Wassup with that?

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Thanks for the info! At the moment, I have my eyes on what appears to be a 1991 175HP. It's been "pending" sale for about 5 days now and it's far away. I'm not sure that I'll try to move forward with it, but hopefully that year will be okay. 🤞

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

My best friend of 40+ years passed in Dec 2021. I miss him every damn day. But, when I go, I believe I'll meet up with him again to go fishing once more. 🎣

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Absolutely! That's why I bought a new 2022 car in 2021 with a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. No worries there. It could very well be my last vehicle. But, I don't have $15,000-20,000 laying around to buy a new outboard. 💲💰💸 :sneaky:

Thanks for the info! Ah yes, the "louder means it's faster" crowd. 😂

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

I won't be alive in 20 years. But thanks though. 🤪

    Went electric

I was going to buy an electric Ryobi 54" ZTR last year, but we spent the money on my wife and the boy to go to the Philippines on vacation for a month instead. Could have bought two ZTRs for that much! 💸

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

You guys are getting me chompin' at the bit for an XR6 now! There's one that comes with an old bass boat that I don't want or need, but it's several hundred miles away! And it's also had "some work" (larger jets plus exhaust work) done on it to further increase performance. The seller...

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

Thanks Chris. All good info. (y) I'm very lucky that my Merc repair shop does indeed work on the old stuff. It's a Dad & Son place, and the old man has a wealth of knowledge which he's passing down to his son. I have a good relationship with them and they've helped me a lot. They'll guide me...

Just thought I'd share a nice photo.

Very nice, Joe! That motor looks very familiar. (y)

How to choose an old 2-stroke 150/175 Merc

I'm in "search mode" for a used 2-stroke 150-175HP Mercury, possibly 2, but just one at a time. I choose Mercury partly because I'm a fan, but also because the only repair shop in my area is for Mercury. Logistics is a factor for me. I've been doing a broad search, a ton of reading and...

    Went electric

I was given 18v Dewalt cordless tools 6 or 7 years ago and switched them over to the 20v type with the converter several years later. Bought all new batteries at the time and they're simply not holding up. There are lots of videos showing a few tricks that can be tried to rejuvenate them. I...

    Shingles

Yup, a neighbor buddy of mine had them and he was miserable. I got the shot several years ago and when they came out with the new double shot version, I got that too. Life is too short to be miserable!

    Went electric

I sold my gas Makita chainsaw a few years back. It was really powerful and did an absolute ton of work around my place while I was clearing it out. But, it just wasn't needed anymore. So, I switched to a small electric 20v Hyper Tough chainsaw for the little work that I need it for...

    Like catfish?

What's weird is back when I fished the Upper Potomac along the MD/WV line, the channel cats tasted absolutely terrible. All the other fish we harvested from the same water tasted great. 🤷‍♂️

    Like catfish?

My best blue cat was from a tributary on the lower Potomac river that I caught back in the mid-90s. That big chub weighed 14 pounds. Instead of filleting and frying it like we usually do, we pickled it into a bunch of Mason jars. Absolutely delicious! (y)😋

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Got the new water pump rebuilt and installed this morning. Had to take time out to go buy another part (for the prop), which slowed me down a little. The new fuel filter arrived yesterday. So! I'm ready to start putting things back together tomorrow. 😁

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Got the water pump stuff removed this morning, then bought a new water pump kit from the local shop. Pricey! I'll get it all installed tomorrow. Definitely needed though. :sneaky::sneaky:
