50 hp 1973 evinrude advise please?

I bought a boat a couple of weeks ago and finaly got to take it out last weekend..On the way out I noticed that when throtle at max the boat would pick up speed gradually , till it reached max speed dont know rpms rpm gauge not working..Fixing now..Then after running awhile on my way back in I noticed that when I put throtle to max as soon as I got past 3/4 throtle the but would slow down and the engine would rev real high then when I droped back down engine would stop reving high and boat would pick up speed agian but I couldnt go past 3/4 throtle without it reving high..I had nothing fouling prop the hull was clean..So Im at a loss as to were to start help please..??

are you saying that the rpm's would go up but the boat would'nt go faster ? if so it sounds like you have a spun prop

yea that what im saying so do you think I might just need to replace the prop?

how do I check for a spun prop? will ther be damage to it if so what would it look like?Thank you for help..

remove the prop and with a perm.marker draw a line across the inner and outer hub peplace prop go run the motor untill you fill it slip, remove prop and check to see if the lines are still lined up.
