Does anyone know how to remove and replace the grease tube and fitting on the transom shield for a Volvo DP-SM. My fitting is striped out. It’s 1/4 inch and just falls right out. Is there a special tool to replace the tube? Also does the transom shield need to be removed?

Might be easier to seat the tube in the gimbal bearing housing if you remove the pivot housing first. From what I understand, the tube is plastic.

Newer gimbal bearings don't require greasing and don't have a grease port. So another option would be to install a newer bearing and seal the grease fitting port somehow. Being full of grease may be sufficient.

I’m going this route as of this season. Grease fitting and tube is still in place, but bearing is non-greasable.

In this case I would look for a way to seal the grease port somehow. I remember seeing someone remove the tube, tap the hole in the bearing carrier and put a screw in. Might have been here or on some other forum.

Do you really need to seal both holes? The hole for the gimbal bearing housing of course, yes, but there's water on both sides of the other hole (the one for the grease fitting).
