seems like good info to me. that's why we're going to 4 strokes, right? no problem doing my part to help protect our waterways.

I agree. It cannot be a big surprise to anyone that traditional carburated outboards produce a fair bit of unburned fuel and oil into the exhaust, which goes directly into the waterway.
The effects of this can only be negative. How negative is open to question, and certainly need to be studied, but common sense tells us that less emissions, either thru DFI technology or 4 stroke or whatever, can only help.
To pretend it has no effect, or that some other factor is as bad or worse, like freighters pumping holds or bilges or whatever, misses the point.

As regarding pollutants such as petro-chemicals and the like, less is always better in our waterways.

Just my $.02 worth.

John

Are cleaner running engines good for all of us? Only a fool would say no.....I have always thought Meles' numbers suspect, to the point of being imflammatory....

Just curious. Why would you find them suspect? The configuration of a typical 2 stroke with traditional carburated would suggest that to get a full charge of fuel in the combustion chamber, a little of the incoming fuel charge will go right thru the exhaust port before it closes. Ever look at a barrel after an outboard has been run in it for any length of time? Or a run tank at an outboard shop? Clearly there is a fair bit of unburned hydrocarbons being emitted. As motors have improved, this has become less and less, but it has not been eliminated.
I have no idea his technique in measuring this, or whether it is precisely accurate (I suppose it would matter what the make and model # of the engine and the RPM, etc) but it sounds in the ballpark to me.

John

Well the problem will always be there regardless of what the government does, and I to care about the waterways, but I for one can not afford to buy a new motor everytime someone says "OH NO, THIS OR THAT IS BAD" for the environment.
I agree that 2 strokes do put pollutants in the water, but I keep mine up to par all the time and that helps cut down on it.
Sorry :( thats just the way I feel.

how much pollution do the factories in NJ release
into the enviornment? a heck of a lot more than
outboards. we are just easier targets....
true, it adds to the problem, but it's a band-aid
on a bullet wound IMHO. go after the REAL polluters will ya please?
oh I forgot, they have lawyers and contribute $
to local politicians.
M.Y.

I wouldn't stir em up too much...they might decide to change the tank size of our toilets again.

In a carburated automobile before catalytic
converters, 75% of fuel entering the combustion
chamber escaped out the exhaust unburnt.
I would imagine the same principals apply to
carburated outboards.?

Re: You are killing me, Mother E.

My small town has held steady at a pop. of 4000 for over 30 years. Yet we have had to replace our sewer treatment plant 3 times, and our fresh water supply system twice in the last 20 years. Now they have decided that we have to remove copper from the drinking water. This will cost us another 4+million in the next few years. The water is cleaner than it has ever been, but they (EPA) keep lowering the standard of what is acceptable.

We are still paying for the "improvements" they mandated 15 years ago.

Incidentaly, the reason the population has stayed the same, has a lot to due with the fact that no one will build a house within the confines of the water district.

And no new rental units either. The city owns the electric utility and places leins on landlords properties for renters that don't pay their elec bills. Therefore, no new apartments, no affordable housing for workforce so businesses relocate in surroounding comunities. So they are cutting their own tax base while their expenses are rising.

Between the federal mandates and the small town gov't ignorance, I'm suprised they can keep the power on at the city hall.
