Guy calls me today wanting someone to look at his engine, a 5.7 in front of a Alpha drive. Said it quit and wouldn't start. I do the "what was going when it happened" thing.

Seems him and three buddies (all in late 20s from what I gather) were crusing around with the engine running about 3500 RPMs and turning the ignition off for a second and then back on to, as they said, "get a sound like a 12 guage shot gun". From what he said they did it at least a couple dozen times until the last time and it didn't work when they turned the key back on.

Got to love the fools, God made so dang many of them.

It's always a great on an engine to go from 3500 RPM's to a dead stop in a half second.

Did the take it in to you?

Re: You are going to love this one...

soooo what happens?

it loads up the fuel and when you turn the ignition back on it backfires out the exhaust. hence the 12 gauge sound.

you can do it on older bikes as well but I sure wouldn't recommend doing it a couple dozen times. I have done it once or twice, first time was actually on accident and scared the bejeezus out of me.

That's known as job security for marine mechanics:D

I would've told them to get a 12 guage and some shells if they like the sound of one...but maybe we are better off keeping these geniuses disarmed.:p

I'll admit we used to do that (backfire) when we were kids, around 16 or 17. I can see kids doing it, they do stupid things and then get over it. Someone in their 20s? OK, maybe once just for fun if they don't know any better, but repeatedly? I bet they learn a lesson.

LOL, I used to do that back in the seventies when I was still in my teens.

Did it with a 1964 Plymouth 318 cu.in. It got expensive after blowing up the third replacement muffler.

Heh...we used to do that to the company vans when I first got into the field.

My first service van was a mid-80's Ford with a 460. Get it up to highway speed, turn off the key, back on and blow out the muffler. Learned it from an "older" tech, at the time. Gave it a nice throaty sound, and a little more oomph...it seemed at the time.

Coincidentally, we were in our 20's and also did not own the vehicles. :D

We used to do it with the Tallahassee city trucks back in the 70's. As others have said, it's a great way to quickly remove a muffler!

A guy in high school blowed the muffler on his truck after doing this. Took it to shop class fixed muffler with sheet metal then talked him in to it one more time... It blowed the carb off :D

Re: You are going to love this one...

You know I've never even heard of doing that before. And now not only did I learn about doing that, I learned about not doing that at the same time.

I've done it on my riding mower when it was brand new. If I tripped the seat interrupt on accident for a second it would backfire. For some reason it stopped doing this. Probably because I don't trip the seat interrupt for as long now that I am used to the thing.
