the boat is a 73 Yates 16' semiv- it is getting a complete reconstuction.
At this point I have have the wood Core of the stingers fixed to the hull. The stinger BASICLY BASICLY (1) 8' 2x4 2"x4" & (2) 8' 2X3 2"X3".
I yrds 8 4oz matt 4oz matt yrds 7 6oz cloth both 50 cloth(both 50" wide) I got the thin glass thinking it would bend better. I am laying the glass epxoy with epxoy and I have 14 of 12/" & 1/2" chop strand also cabosil of cab-o-sil....

now for the question matt.... was cutting the realized to shape and relised that it will not wrap over the stinger well it leaves gaps on the top corners. So the I different some testing with diffrent methods, like putting down matt mayo before the matt & matt slits in the matt to help it different peices using differnt. size peices.
So longs story short I have not found a method that I am happy with I want the glass to be bounded all the way around the wood core
So what is the trick of the stinger trade? great full help and info would be greatfull.

Sand the edges of the boards so that they have a larger radius, glass doesn't like to bend around sharp corners.

Richard,

Like gwyse said, glass does not like sharp corners, ease all the edges. That is what I did, I also used thickend epoxy (peanut butter consistancy) and spread just below the edge I was rolling and used the roller to round the edge.

The other technique I used was to put heavy plastic over the glass as it set (when I needed a sharp corner) and made a wooden "hat". Resin won't stick to plastic.

You can also cover the area with plastic, seal the edges and vacuum the air out, this will pull everything flat. Vacuum bagging, is something that works well if you do it right.

Generally, you can cover the resin/glass with plastic and then figure out a way to pull the plastic tight. I have used tape, bricks := , wood, etc. Whatever worked for the shape I was trying to get.

Peace.

Re: Wraping glass over the stingers

I've used staples and thickened resin to do it but my favorite way of doing stringers is to glass each side first, then glass the top with another piece. It greatly reduces the dreaded bubble at the turn. The only key here is to glass down the side of the stringer far enough to make the glass stay down. Usually 2 or more inches will do it. I only glass the tops with one layer but use a normal layup on the sides.

If you have only a few bubbles do a slit or cut them out with a razor while the resin is "green" (plyable) but not hard. Then glass over later or seal with thickened resin.

This is really the wrong application for 6 oz cloth (as in 6oz per sq yd). I wouldn't waste the money or time doing it on stringers.
