I have a 24ft wellcraft sportsman. I have 300' of 5/8 anchor rope, and i am wanting to add 200' more rope. Would I be ok with 1/2" rope? The boat ways approx 6000 pounds loaded. The 1/2 rope I have seen has 7500lb breaking strength. I know thats enough for the boat, but is it enough when you add the rough water. I have no idea what kind of force that is, and if it would be enough to break the rope. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

A lot depends on the anchor you use too. A lot of the anchors drag on the bottom. Some dig in. You need to get an anchor for the size boat you have.

why do you need 500 feet of rode??? looking to anchor in 100 feet of water?

1/2 in will be fine aslong as it is not braided rope. We use 1/2 in on our 10000lb sailboat.

yes I will be anchoring in 100 to 200' of water. I figure 1/2 will be fine just wanted some opinions. The anchor I have is fit for my boat. Thanks

Make sure it's nylon three-strand because it stretches a lot and takes shocks well. That's what I use on my 6000 lb boat. It's plenty strong enough.

i think the rule of thumb for rope size is an 1/8 inch for every 10 ft.

That's more than enought, if not overkill. Growing up, our family boat was 46ft & 27 Tons gross wgt. We had two anchor rodes, a 5/8" & a (believe it or not) 3/8" (200 feet of each). The advantage of the 3/8" is that it stretches and acts like a big rubber band, which transmits much less 'jerking' to the anchor. We had a 24lb Danfroth anchor on the 5/8" and a 35lb Danforth on the 3/8", and over the years spent a the night aboard through a couple of hurricanes with those.

... Oh yes, as has been said, use a three strand Nylon (for the stretch), not a low stretch Dacron or Spectra or something similar.
