Would like Super Porpoise info

I just got an old Super Porpoise (14' glass hull with rigging similar to a Sun Fish...I think!) that was given to me, rotting out in the woods. Apparently they were short lived, built in the early 60's, but I can't find any info on rigging, other than some obscure references to the SunFish. The hull appears fast, and the sail (which I CAN find) is larger than the SunFish, and I see that they are still listed in many racing lists... If anyone out there knows where I can find some info on the nice little boat, it would really be appreciated!

The first boat my dad and I owned was a Super Porpoise. I'll see if I still have any literature on it but I doubt it. You're right, it is a latine(sp?) rig just like a Sunfish. We enjoyed the boat. It has a little more capacity than the Sunfish and more sail area.
Do you have the spars and sail?

Re: Would like Super Porpoise info

I do not have any of the rigging...no tiller or daggerboard either. I was considering altering/extending a Sunfish rigging set up if I couldn't find the proper rigging (which would be much preferred!) I figured from the measurments of the sails that are still available that it had a fairly large sail area...larger than the Sunfish. I am trying to find some pictures or drawings of one...there is nothing available on the web about the company that made them other than one reference to a Michigan company (Molded Plastics Inc.) that went out of business in 1963. I did see one for sail at an auction on the east coast this summer where they said it was a 1971, so maybe another company took over the manufacture of it. Any information you had would be great...! Thanks!

Scott

Re: Would like Super Porpoise info

Our family has obtained a "porpoise" & we are guessing it is mostly complete, we are working on minor fiberglass repair before doing a decent paint job. My question... I cannot quite figure out the rigging, something seems missing... does anyone have pics or diagram of how the mainsheet line should go, etc. I've got the sail up once but I am certain somthing's amiss. Any help would be great. Also, the rudder cheek(?) is plastic and cracked through-- can I use a sunfish rudder cheek? I hope I have made sense here. Thanks for any and all help.

Welcome to iboats forums elliottly.
Best to start a new thread with your question , as your question may not be seen when ask at the end of a 2003 post.

Re: Would like Super Porpoise info

I have a 1972 Super Porpoise II that I have just restored. It was in beautiful shape when I purchased it earlier this Spring. What specifically do you need? I can probably forward you pics of whatever you need. The rigging that steers the sail starts at the rudder. It is connected to a small stainless hoop , which is located on top of the rudder, up to the tail of the lower boom, forward thru 2 pulleys, and then down into the cockpit where I have located a new Harken swiveling pulley with cam cleats. The mainsheet line starts at the upper boom, up over a pulley on the top of the mast, downwards to the pully on the deck just forward of the mast, and then to the cleat located in between the foward cockpit edge and the mast. Hope this helps.

HI,

I am new to iBoats. I just today picked up SuperPorpoise and it is in fairly good condition except that the sail is tattered.

Can you provide information? Where would I get a sail? Is this a Sunfish clone/knockoff?

Metal all seems good. I was thinking I would sand and varnish the centerboard, tiller and rudder.

Any photos or documentation would be helpful.

Welcome to the iboats Forum! The experts here, which I am NOT, can help you with most issues. Earlier this summer, I helped a cousin rig a Snark which has a similar "lateen" sail but smaller area than yours. We had to search the internet and eBay for info and parts. I found this about your boat's sail:

Good luck!
