Worms in fish....

I just read the bluegill thread and I was wondering about all fish. The smelt in San Pablo Bay come easy and I've caught 18-20 inch ones. Took one home once and it had BIG worms through the meat. Since then I've tried using them as bait in chunks and every one has had these big worms. Last night I brought home some perch. One of the fillets had a very small thin orange worm in it. I tossed that one, but none of the others had anything in them. These were also out of the same Bay, but I've caught plenty of fish out of here without anything wrong with them. Stiper, Shark, Ray, Perch, etc etc...

What's the cause of this? Which fish with worms should I watch out for and NOT eat or even catch. The large smelt are just annoying because they take bite all day and I'd rather my bait stay out for something good. I saw the worms in the bluegill were ok, but those I caught have never had them in it.

advice? opinions?

Re: Worms in fish....

They worms in the saltwater fish are ok too, as long as the fish is properly cooked... mmmmmmmmmmm wormy fish!!!:p

Some of the worms in saltwater fish are a little different though, they're actually parasitic crustaceans and can dampen your dining experience by being crunchy/gritty like eating sand. These are usually found in fish that spend a lot of time laying on the bottom. They appear as black, brown, or green dot in the fillets and should be cut out because of their texture. The Red Grouper down in the Gulf of Mexico are full of these things.

Cutting the worms out of fish is the most appetizing thing to do, but it's not necessary.
