I'm thinking about intalling a anchor windlas and will need to build a compartment for the rope and chain to fall in. I have not seen any other boats with one so I was wondering how big that area needs to be so for 200 ft of rope? and what shape? Is tangling a problem? What about depth verse width?

I keep 300' of 5/8" nylon in a compartment 36"w x 30"l by 20" deep, When I let it fall into natural coils without forcing it, I have never had a tangling problem. The chain goes in right on top.

Get a 5 gal plastic painters type pail and see how that measures up for your size line. I use the pails on 1/2"dia x 200'rodes for storage.
