New to the forum and have done some searching for this but was looking for a good yes or no. Can I use CLR to remove the corrosion from my sterndrive and then sand the bad spots and repaint them? (Bravo II).

Thanks!

Welcome aboard!

I don't know how much the CLR will help. It won't hurt however. You do need to remove any corrosion that you can and prime with a good primer made for aluminum. (It is green, and for the life of me, I can't remember what it is!). The top coat with your choice of paint. The most important thing is the prep and primer. Then I like Rustoleum Gloss Black.

Ayuh,... Donno what it'll do,...

Go ahead, 'n try it....

I just knock the bigger chunks of crud off each year, 'n shoot it with Rustoleum industrial enamel, in black...

I just bought the boat and this is my first. Here is the sterndrive. I have a new prop that is going on after painting. I was going to spray CLR all over it, sand it, and then use a spray primer and paint for sterndrives from West Marine.

I don't think CLR is going to touch that corrosion. You have A LOT of sanding ahead of you, sir. Also, a little odd to me that the upper half with the gimbal ring and housing are corroded WAY more than the lower unit.

Hi Guys:

Don't waste your time with CLR. It only works in TV ads! In real life it just simply won't do the job especially on your outdrive.

Starbrite barnacle remover or muratic acid, or a light sand blasting

Might want to replae the anodes and check the ground straps while you're at it and make sure they are clean and have good contact with the drive

Heading to West Marine tomorrow to get anodes, paint and Starbrite. Which Starbrite product do I need? They have 80 listed on their website The plan is to soak it in cleaner Saturday morning, sand paper it clean, prime and paint.

Being a first timer, what do I need to cover with plastic to protect from the cleaner and paint?

I use it for calcification from fresh water -- but my lake water stained outdrive has never looked that bad.

Holy crap! That out drive has character!

I think your best bet will be a 220 disk on a 4 1/2" angle grinder. Then remove the prop and slide a new outdrive in front of it...

Does the trim still work on that?

Everything still works and a new drive is not an option right now ($4-5k).

Pull the prop off and inspect the rear beaing carrier closely. If it's corroded too bad the drive will either leak oil or let water in. Either way you'll need a new drive. You also need to find out why that drive corroded so badly. As stated above, check anoded, the Mercathode system, and the marina where it was kept (for stray current). I still think it's strange that it's the upper part of the drive housing and the gimbal stuff that's corroded the worst.

Just guessin, but I would say that maybe that is the 2nd drive.
An SEI, Brand New Drive is only $1295.00. The gimble and others are extra.

Read his post again dude. He has a BRAVO TWO. SEI does NOT make BRAVO TWOs. They do make a Bravo One lower unit for under $1000, but a B1 is not a good match to his boat.

Oh, and the price of a SEI Alpha One Gen 2 has increased to $1495 now. With an Alpha One now at $1395.

A brass wire brush on a 3/8" drill and a lot of time, then the CLR or acid to finish cleaning the corrosion pitted areas, then primer, then paint. In about 1/2 a day it'll look a lot better, but you gotta wonder how it looks inside! Good Luck!
