I just moved to the area and got my motor running, so I am looking for some good spots to start fishing.

I'm not asking for your secret spots :) (unless of course you would like to divulge that information)
just a generally good place to start.

cvlngineer

Re: Where to go in Baffin Bay

Civil,

If you are new to the area I would wait on Baffin. Too many rocks in there and they are bad on lower units. I fished Black Bluff on the south side of the bay and had great luck.

It might be worth going with a Baffin Guide the first trip, and mark some spots. You would be surprised what you can do with a hand held GPS. Plot the guides course, then use it for yourself later.

Re: Where to go in Baffin Bay

Ranger,

I've heard that Baffin was very rocky. I just moved to Kingsville from Beeville back in late August. I finally talked a friend of the family into selling me his small boat, so I thought I would get warmed up for spring. I have thought about hiring a guide and taking my gps with me, but was unsure about how he would feel about it. Are they touchy in that area?

Thanks,

cvlngineer

Civil,

I have never used a guide. Live within 20 min. of the coast and grew up fishing Copano, Aransas, etc. bays. Have only fished Baffin a couple of times and played it really cautious.

Put the gps in your lunch box or something. What they don't know won't hurt them.

How long did you live in Beeville? I know some folks up there.

Re: Where to go in Baffin Bay

Ranger,

I was born and raised in a small town 12 miles north of Beeville, Tuleta, it is just south of Pettus.

I lived in Beeville for about two years going to college, finished there and now I am going to A&M Kingsville.

I took my boat out in Baffin today, I just fixed the motor, and just took it out for a short test ride close to the boat ramp. It is just a little 12' jonboat with a 6 hp motor on it...goes real slooow. he he. A friend of my older brother knows the bay pretty well, and he volunteered to ride with me pretty soon and show me the places to avoid. We are supposed to hire a guide to go out in the spring, I will sneak my gps receiver along and mark his fishing spots. :D Mua-ha-ha.

Thanks,
cvlngineer

Civil,

Does Bob Horne the sheriff live in Tuletta or Normana? I spent a few days at Bee County Col. back in the early 80's. I have a deer lease in Berclair.

Ranger,

Bob Horne lives in Normanna. He is a great guy, I've known him since I was a youngster. He did me several favors back in my wilder days. Heh-Heh.

From what I've heard, Berclair is a good area for deer and birds. My older brother, Marvin Smith, worked for Fina at their office in Berclair before they closed it. He transferred and is the production forman for Fina in the valley now.

cvlngineer

Re: Where to go in Baffin Bay

I just got back in from Baffin a few minutes ago. I put in at drum point and fished for a couple of hours around the wells or whatever they are out in the middle. It is much shallower than I would expect. I took it slow and easy, so no damage done ;) . No luck, though. The wife and daughter got tired and bored, so I had to call it a day just as they were starting to bite.

cvlngineer

Civil,

Glad you got to get the boat wet. If you have a map of Baffin look for the Tide Gauge Bar on the north side of the bay. Most people fish that along with East Kleberg Point. Trick is the southwind blows right up on both of those places.

At the south end of county rd 1546 is a boat place with ramp. We used to duck hunt out of there.

My father was the DA for 20 some odd years in Bee, Live Oak, Mc Mullen, Aransas, and San Pat counties. He and Mr. Horne were very good friends. Had a buddy spend some tense moments in the jail from a PI. think Johnny Rodrigez was playing at the Col. But that has been 20 years ago maybe.

He He, tense moments huh :D

Yep, took the boat out and got it wet, my wife got almost as wet as the boat. She didn't have much fun, but it worked, I got the authorization to buy a bigger boat! I have to sell this little one though, I hate to do it. I spent a lot of time sanding it down, re-priming it and painting it. It looks brand new. And after working on the engine, it runs like a champ. Seems a shame to let it go.

cvlngineer

Sounds like you got good river boat. My wife has only been in my boat once in the last year. Oh well, I didn't buy it for her anyway.
