Where to find year of my Merc?

I purchased a boat this fall, 50 horse, 4 banger. It runs great, but the darn thing is like a stray dog-I can tell what it is-sort of. It's been through so many owners, I don't trust the inforamtion I got. I was told it's a 1984. S/N is 6276508. Any help out there?
