I aquired a 1984 6Eo s 052910 4hp Mercury Mariner made in Japan. What is the difference between the American made and the Japanese version? Are the parts interchangeable? Thanks.Larry

They are both made by Tohatsu, in Japan. Merc did not make 4hp engines in USA in 1984.

Early Mariners were built by Yamaha. The Japanese versions were either Yamaha or Tohatsu motors with a Mariner name put on them.

Only the later high horsepower Mariners were American made and used the same parts as Mercury.
