What Type of 1 Part Topside Paint?

I've tried multiple methods to re-invigorate the shine and luster of my gel-coat, but nothing will get it to the gloss level that I want. I'm pretty sure I"m just going to repaint the boat. The big question is: What type of paint should I use? Obviously, I'll use Marine topside paint, but there are different kinds.

Mega Gloss? 1-Part Topside Polyurethane Enamel, Bright Red, Gallon - Blue Water Marine Paint 8714G - iboats

Polyurethane enamel seems to me like it would shine quite well. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Mega Gloss Alkyd?, Bright Red, Gallon - Blue Water Marine Paint 8914G - iboats

From everything I've read, Alkyds seem to be the more traditional topside paints. Do they shine the same way the polyurethane would?

Should I look into other brands? Does Blue Water have a good reputation as a paint manufacturer?

I'm thinking that I will carefully brush on this paint. Will that look OK over fiberglass, or will it look like a homemade hackjob?

Do I need primer underneath either of these types of paint, or will a properly scuffed and prepped gel coat surface get the job done sans primer?

Welp .. that depends on how well you can flow the paint that you use and how talented you are with a brush/roller.

It could turn out Fine/OK ( nothing like a car paint job ) . .. or it could turn out Horrible. .. or somewhere in the middle.

Just depends.

It would depend on the quality and condition of the substrate gelcoat .. if the gel has massive perosity then your going to be dealing with massive pinholes that would/should show up in the paint job.

Prep is KEY mate .. PREP.

I totally agree with you .. 2 part is more expensive but its worth it in the long run.

The time invested prepping a boat for paint should be equivalent to the cost of the paint itself.

It took 2 weeks to prep and only 3 hours to spray this boat.

It took 4 days of sanding and buffing to get this ..

This is a Dead on shot of the hull reflection ( not some angle shot ).

As far as a one part paint you have to consider a few things.

Durability
Adhesion
Longevity
Application
Resistance

You should also consider your own skill level.

What your seeing in the pics are by a Pro like me and others that have experience with the nature of paint and tools/materials and how they work.

Please do not make the mistake of just looking at a few pics along with products used and expect the same outcome when you go and do it.

Its not a Recipe for perfection at all. Sure we can give you the ingredients .. but the outcome is very much different from person to person/skill level to skill level.

Not saying you Cant get a perfect job from a roll and tip. I personally know a husband/wife team that can roll and tip Awl Grip like GLASS .. I mean Glass! It can be done but that couple has been doing it for 20 years.

I know you may be under a budget. I would contact Woody for his one pac paint job and how to apply it with satisfactory results. Remember though.. you probably will not get the same results on your first run.

Just my 37 cents worth.

Good luck mate.
