Hey everyone, new to this boat thing. But, super excited to rebuild this boat my father law has. It has been sitting in the barn for years since he bought it. And I have had plans the last few years to pull it out rebuild it and give it some TLC so that my family and I can enjoy it. My first question on this forum is I think it is a starcraft, but what type and year? Also, I measured and it's about 17' by 6' or so.
thanks,
Brian

Do you think it is possible to modify this by building a seating area in front? Putting an aisle where window is and basically replacing it with a split window. Then put seating in the bow.

Anything is possbile, but the question is how hard, how expensive, and is it worth it. I can tell you that will not be an easy or cheap conversion, and imho totally not worth it on such and old boat with little value. That is unless it has huge sentimental value.

If you are looking for a cheap bowrider you would probably be better off getting this one running, selling it for what you can get, and then looking for an old bowrider. They are a dime a dozen and it will likely be less work then rebuilding and converting this.

Too many bow riders floating around to make that a worthwhile conversion. Look for a 16 or 18' SS model.

The cross member upon which the steering wheel is mounted is a structural member. There is another at the stern. Those two "beams" and the U shaped ribs in the hull keep the sides intact with out flopping or vibrating. The engine is over 50, more like 60 years old.

The shifting mechanism looks to be electric which was abandoned by OMC due to reliability issues. The engine is a large cubic inch cross flow OMC which were not very fuel efficient considering what has been available since Direct and Loop Charging carb engines have come to be and especially when considering fuel injected and 4 stroke engines. I had enough of them to know.

I had an 18' Holiday I/O. Good open water boat but not stable when parallel to the waves. Not that big of a deal to me but to some it is. If you are a good mechanic, don't mind spending a lot of time to locate unique parts, dealing with corrosion and all plus a good carpenter/craftsman and need a lengthy, expensive, project you seem to have picked out a darling.

Thanks for the advice guys. I dont really think it's too much of a sentimental value considering that dad just bought it used and stuck it in the barn. So, I have done some searching online and found this one. Which I am assuming is another star craft. Maybe bigger, definitely newer than dads. Any idea on what kind of Star craft this is and year? Good boat? This guy wants 900 OBO and it basically came with his house when he bought it so he is not wanting it.

if you take the 900 you are willing to spend on that, sell the FILs boat for 500-1000 bucks and take the thousands rebuilding it would have cost you can likely buy something in decent shape

Without running the boat on the water, the only thing you'll know works is the trailer. ;)

And judging from the condition from the photos only, I'd assume that boat hasn't been used in a while. So, also assume mechanical problems and the onset of rot. Effectively it's probably been neglected and is in need of a lot of work. Generally, you can't over come that kind of repair/restoration without a lot of elbow grease and about $4k (as a suggested starting number). It's a lot of work and you'll probably wind up with a $2,100 boat on a $900 trailer. <= and if you like the boat and want to do the project, that's cool.

But if you wanna' get out on the water and play: you can probably find a decent ready to go boat for about $4k.

^ I was suggesting you offer to take it for free if you like the trailer. not with 900 but maybe 500 if you clean it up. boat is woth 0 less the cost to dump it.

a 4k budget gets you on the water now with lots to tinker with. 6-10 likey a very nice turn key unit

Free boats are expensive. To answer your question "What kind of Starcraft is this"?

An expensive one.

The 900 dollar boat is crap. Your Dad's boat is a real winner. All it probably needs is a good cleanup....and a new engine. The old Johnson was a fine motor in its day, but no parts are available now and the length it has sat has made it useless.

In round numbers, a SAFE usable boat will probably cost in the $6K range. The cheap, ones are the ones you see getting towed every weekend. SeaTow is really a bargain. Hundreds per year in fees. Without it the tow job will cost more than the boat is worth.
