I am a huge Shimano fan, The new stradics are awesome along with the saros. The older white stradics i had some problems with. But for the money the new sahara is a really good buy. smooth, quiet and dependable. As for rods. I love the St, croix avids. 7ft med action avid with a new stradic. Cant go wrong. What does everyone else prefer?

Heartland rods & Penn reels. Never had any problems wrestling salmon on Lake Ontario with them so no need to change

It depends on the type of fishing I?m doing. I?m a Penn guy for trolling. An Ambassador guy for surf fishing and spinners are a combination of Penn, Diawa, and Okuma.

All my rods are custom built on a mix of Lamiglas, Allstar, Calstar and North Forks Composite blanks.

My equivalent to your combo is a Penn 260 Slammer on a 6'-6", fast action, med hvy power, North Forks Composite blank.

I like phlueger spinning reels for my bass fetish. I currently have a gold medalist which I think is similar to the trion. I am going to replace it for the upcoming season as the bail is finally starting to fail after years of very hard duty. I think I'll get a president or supreme.

For a rod I like my medium action ugly stick. It's a good all around rod. I use a 7' two piece rod because it fits in my trunk and I shore fish much more than I get out on the boat.

I like the ugly stick rods for bass. They're the only thing I've found that will hold up to getting stepped on, beat on, whacked against trees, and still have a nice feel.
I don't mind spending my money on one.
For reels, I once was an ambassadeur garcia man. I still like them but it appears the quality has gone down. I like some shimano reels, but the only one I've ever bought was a Calcutta that was a gift for my dad on his 70th birthday this past December. I'll have to wait a while, but if it holds up good for him it has to be nearly indestructable and worth the money. When I was buying it a fellow walked up to the counter at bass pro and told me he loves the shimano CORE reels, and that I should buy one. He then proceeded to buy two of the Core reels, which if I recall, ran about 360 bucks apiece. My pockets aren't nearly so deep!
I like my walmart pflueger baitcast reel. Seems to be well worth the money so far.

well i do some musky fishing here in pa. i have 2 calcuttas on st croix musky rods. 7'6'' mh and a h 7'6''. The calcuttas are awesome reels. The are worth the money trust me. I have never been a huge fan of ugly stix. I know there a good rod for bass and catfish, but i do alot of walleye fishing, and there not sensitive enough for a light biting walleye. A good rod for the money if you can find them is a Fenwick eagle gt. 50 bucks, good feel great rod for the money. I bought 2 of them for my wife.

Of the rods I have had I have liked gloomis the best. Next would be St Croix.

I haven't tried many different brands of reels, but I love my collection of 6 Garcias from a Pro Max 150 to a Ambassaduer 7000. The Morrum 5600 is probably my favorite.

Abu makes different models for different vendors. You're not going to get good quality Abu stuff at a big box store or Bass Pro and Cabelas for that matter.

If you want the reel thing, Swedish built, etc. you have to go to the quality tackle shop or an offshore supplier like I do. E-bay is a good place to pick up some of the good stuff.

My set up for lake Erie trolling is Shimano TDR MH rods with Diawa Sealine sg27 reels. Many around also use ugly stick cal1100 MH. These are good all around rods for pulling boards, dipsys, bottom bouncers, etc. The Accudepth plus reels are a great reel for the price. I've got some old Mitchell 3oo reels that are great and have had them for over 15 years, we use them for casting and perch fishing. These reels,I think were made in France.

I've always been big on Abu Garcia baitcasters but prefer shimano spinning reels, like berkley rods

Reels : Diawa, Shimano, Penn, Okuma, Avet - there are a ton of
decent reels out there. Rods: Nothing feels like a g-loomis!

the old mitchell 300s made in the 70's and 80's were amazing. Yeah they were made in france. The new mitchell stuff is terrible. I have one g loomis glh 6'6'' medium. Its a great rod but the avid i feel is the same if not better. And its alot less.

I could hand you half a dozen blanks and you could not tell me which one was which. Loomis, even in it's hay day built multiple grades of rods. There are a lot of better blanks out there than IMX and GL series series rods. Even the GLX is equaled by several other vendors right now.

Today, Loomis rods are has beens. Gary sold the business to Shimano 5-6 years ago and has not been involved since. If you want a real G. Loomis rod (North Fork Composites) you have to go custom or buy a Kistler(sp?). NFC doesn't sell pre-fab rods.

Personally have a mixed bag, mostly Berkley and now a couple high end Bass Pro Shop rods. Favorite reel is a 30 year old Ryobi 5000V which is now on a BPS Pro Qualifier 7' ML.

Re: What kind of rods and reels does everyone prefer?

My brother bought a Kissler - it broke the first day out! They said
money back guarantee if not 100% satisfied. After repeated calls
he was able to get a replacement that he didn't want. I had a
GLX MBR 844C/7' that I punished for many many years - it broke. They replaced it for $20.00, bucks. Nothing I pick up at
Bass Pro or any other place ( complete Rods ) feels like my old
g-loomises. I havn't had a custom rod built in 30+ years - after I picked up my first G-Loomis, there was no need. The Kissler my
brother has feels queer to me - I'm sure they make different styles - I hate false advertisement so I would never buy there stuff. I appreaciate the info - I 'll do some research before I make my next purchase. I have had very bad luck with Fenwicks!

Thumb action bait casters for me. Haven't owned one in a while though. I've been making due with a light weight spinning reel.

Re: What kind of rods and reels does everyone prefer?

I have fished both salt and fresh water, mostly salt.
I prefer a rod that has a light tip action for the most part. The stiffness of the remaining part depends on what I am after of course.
Reels, I have liked Penn and Diawa for Salt water and had Shimano and many other brand names. I don't buy top of the line nor will I buy generic junk in either poles or reels.
I did however find an ultra lite action Ugly Stick the other day in Wal Mart that I thought I would add to my collection. I did not really need another reel so I thought I would just buy the pole. It was $33 to my surprise and I could buy the combo Shakespeare reel and same pole for $35. For $2 more I bought the combo, you never know the reel may be a winner.

Re: What kind of rods and reels does everyone prefer?

I still have an old Mitchell with the automatic flip bail on it, a 330 series I think it is from the 60s? I thought. One of the better reels I have ever had.
I have had to do nothing with it but fish and a little oil and it's working just fine.
I wish I was in that good of shape
