What is a boat like this called?

I saw a boat in a film "Little Buddha" that looked interesting. The boat was in the final scenes of the film. It was a power boat, the bow and stern appeared to have about the same shape, had a tiller for steering and maybe a small cabin in the middle.<br />What type (?) boat is this? Who makes them?<br /><br />thanks...Hank

A Dory. The engine is in the middle (usually outboard) in a well.<br /><br />C-Dory makes one. I think they're still in biz.

I looked at C-Dory - they appear to have a squared stern. The boat I saw had a stern that looked like the bow.<br /><br />thanks...Hank

The boat you describe sounds like the old "Pacific City" (as in Pacific City, Oregon) double-ender dories launched off the beach at Cape Kiwanda on the Oregon coast. My dad's buddy built a couple of them in the early 60's. You'd lay your kicker in the bottom of the boat and row through and past the breakers. Then you'd set your motor in the well and start fishing. Nowadays, the modern dories (like C-Dory) mostly have square sterns.<br /><br />Walt
