I purchased a 1979 starcraft alum. 16 ft. with a 1972 - 65 hp evinrude. Just this Saturday. So I'm really new. A friend came over to winterize it and said water was just coming out one hole in the side. Nothing out the back. He said this was not a good sign. Also when he took the top off the motor he said 2 wires were cut. they are on the bottom just to the middle left of the motor. We have no idea what they are. (no manual) The motor starts right up when we put the muff on it and idles nice. I will stop here so not to overwelm. Both you and me. Thank you.

There is just one pee hose for water towards the top of the motor. The wires may be unused wires. What color are they?

Re: What Have I Done??

When you say you just got this boat and motor, do you mean that you have not had it on the water to test it at all?

Also, look around the transom mount area and give us the model number of your outboard.

I don't quite understand what you mean about the water coming out. Where, exactly, was it coming out? Were you running it on muffs at the time?

The more details you can provide, the better able we'll all be to help you.

And pictures! Pictures make it SO MUCH easier to explain a problem then for these guys to try to imagine it.

Re: What Have I Done??

I have a '72 65HP Evinrude. I also have an OEM manual. So I may be able to help if it's the same model. I'm not too mechanical, but if you have any specific questions such as what those wires are I'll look it up for you. Pics ARE very helpful, as well as specific info like what color the wires are if it's not clear in the pics.

Getting your own OEM service manual will be very useful. Once you get your model #, try eBay-- you might get lucky with a cheaper used manual. Otherwise try www.outboardbooks.com.

Yeah, water coming out one side, I'm scratching my head at that too. Unless a peehole was added at some point (those motors don't have them).

I hope you're planning on running it before you put it up for the winter just to see how it runs. But you're wise to ask about the water exiting the motor before you take it for a spin. If you have a digital camera and don't know how to compress and upload the pics here just ask. -- Def. worth a thousand words!:)
Must have been a good deal to buy it at the end of the boating season, eh??!;)
Good luck,
