Here is a description of the engine on a boat I am looking at. A knowledgeable opinion on the hypotheticals of what could have happened to this engine and what it might take to repair would greatly help my risk assessment of buying this boat or not. "This boat is a 1993 Ebbtide Campione. 19 feet long. The exhaust manifolds were not completely drained last fall so they froze and cracked over the winter. Also, one of the engine's freeze plugs popped out. It started right up this spring before I knew what happened, but I instantly saw the water coming out the exhausts and shut it off. When I checked the oil it looked good (didn't appear to have moisture in it). The lower unit had an oil change last year and looks to be fine. The engine is a GM 5.0 Vortec. The exhaust manifolds were Yamaha, but from what I've heard you can fit up Mercruiser exhausts to the engine since the GM engine was never different."
Thanks.

Why buy something that is junk? If someone didn't take the time to make sure the engine was winterized what makes you think that the rest was taken care of...... RUN.....

It never ceases to amaze me when sellers advertise something like, "It's only a $50.00 part to fix it but I don't want to mess with it" or anything similar. Ok, let me get this straight, you'd rather take a $1000.00 price hit than replace a $50.00 part? Anything for sale that has a line like, "It only needs....." you can safely assume it's not the one for you.

Re: What do you make of this????

He is asking $2500. I would have been looking more for around $1000-1500. The only reason it caught my eye is the boat interior and hull are in very good condition. The boat was nearly $20,000 new. I was hoping against hope that the engine fix might be something I could get done for around $1000 and viola! A very nice boat for a very nice price. Put this one in the "pipe dream" category I guess. Not being an engine guy I was concerned about the poor drain job leading to a cracked block or some other such bigger problem but it seems just the existing problems are enough to warrant running away from this.

Ok, well trying to be a little more tactful than the last reply here. My point was simply that with a higher original value one could reasonably expect a more quality brand name, better built boat, etc. Furthermore, suggesting that this boat is worth only $500 seems a tad ridiculous to me since I'm pretty sure the boat w/out engine is worth a good deal more than that. Beyond insinuating that I'm a moron for including the fact that the boat was worth 20k eighteen years ago as a factor I fail to see what constructive or informative input you've provided here.

Shakey, think what you want. But an 18 year old bowrider with a broken motor is a $500 basket case at best. Worth only what the trailer is worth. How's that for constructive?

I'd say it's about on par with your last comment. On the bright side of things, at least you are consistent.

If the buyer has the tools, equipment, knowledge and budget to rebuild things at lower than repair shop costs and overhead, with results that give you a boat that is better than a used one that is well cared for then it is worth it. If not walk away.

Ayuh,... Believe what you wish, But....
A boat with a Dead motor, has very little to NO value....
Regardless what it was worth brand new 20 years ago...

Even Million Dollar boats rot from neglect, 'n add in a Junk motor, you end up with Nothing of value...

Tilliam is guilty of Brutal Honesty, but he is pretty much Right on this...

Re: What do you make of this????

Thanks for the defense Bond-o. Oh, I forgot to point out the OBSOLETE outdrive beings it's a Yamaha!

Actually Shakey, I am trying help you out. I have seen and heard this story TOO many times. A "newbie" wants a boat, knows nothing about them, gets a "great deal" on a "great boat", and then has NOTHING but problems. Spends THOUSANDS of dollars, and still has junk. Disgusted and defeated, he gives up and BAD MOUTHS the boating industry to anyone who will listen. Well, I think more people should own boats, not less. And that way more waterway rights will be protected.
While you logic is fataly flawed, I will at least give you credit for asking before leaping into the frying pan and fire. Sorry that my completely honest and accurate logic isn't what you wanted to hear, but it's the truth and it'll save you TONS of money and headaches. I don't even expect you to pay me for it! ;)
