Can someone explain the difference between the two?

Adding wax allows the surface to cure tack free, which means that if you need to add any further glass or other coating to the surface you need to sand and clean it thoroughly to removes all traces of the wax. Without wax you can put down another layer with little or no prep work. NEVER buy waxed resin.

Rather than identifying them as "Waxed" or "Unwaxed".....Lets use "Laminating"(Un-waxed" and Finish(Waxed) resins......Which tells you exactly what their intended purposes is......Laminating resin is used whenever you intend to add another layer (or more) of glass to your lay-up....It remains "tacky" for better adhesion the next layer (or Lamination)......Your last or "finish coat" should be the "waxed" or Finishing resin which will cure hard and can be sanded smooth in preparation for paint or whatever AFTER you remove the waxy surface of the cured resin......
Just a little FYI, epoxy resins are usually regarded as best for laminating because of their superior strength and bonding properties and are less brittle than Polyester types thou Epoxy is somewhat more expensive than Poly.......epoxy types will adhere to either epoxy or poly, but poly will not stick to epoxy!!!
