just got my new boat in the water today to break it in, (ice broke up on wednsday) and runs quite good

anyways, when i get up on plain, somthings causing water to spray from the motor, straight up and into the back of the boat, and all over me. I havnt been able to figure out what it is yet. any ideas?

this on a 2002 12' crestliner, with a 2003 9.8hp nissan motor. Oh, and it does this in any tilt position.

Re: water spray problem?

sounds like what happens when your motor is too deep in the water. Like a long shaft motor on a boat that requires a short shaft. Generaly speaking, the anti-cavitation plate on your motor should be anwhere from level with, to 1 inch below the bottom of your boat.

this may or may not be your problem, but it is something to check. bigger boats with much bigger motors seam to be able to run the anti-cavitation plate above the bottom of the boat, but small boats and outboards generaly require someplace in the 1 inch below area.

Good Luck
hope this helps.

just checked that, incase they gave me the wrong motor or somthung. motors a 9.8B1 (short shaft) took out a tape measure to check too
figure my best bet is maby to have a chat with the dealer. only 10 min frorm where i work.

motor has way more power than I exptected it to. but then consider the only other 9.9 ive used is a 35 year old merc old without a rebuild ever.

I'd almost bet you have a transom mounted transducer. Some will put off quite a bit of spray. I had a new Basstracker in '88 that had a transducer that would shoot a stream up the side of the engine. I ended up installing an aluminum shroud over the transducer to redirect the spray.

Bluechips
Only real way to find out is get some goggles have some one else drive and look over the back and see what it is hitting. Once you find it then easy to figure out what to do.

Re: water spray problem?

Bluechips,
Early this spring I was trying to eliminate a porpoising problem on my boat by lowering the motor (1-1/2"). As soon as the boat got on plane I immediately noticed I had a lot of water coming over the transom. Bottom line I created a problem you described by having the motor too low.
