Water pump not pumping

I have a 1985 Force 85 Horsepower motor. I just replaced the water pump but am getting zero flow from the two "pee holes". I am using a water tank ( i.e. a rubbermaid storage bin) I used a pump kit without a new housing. The housing had some corrosion on the inside and I sanded it with some fine grit sandpaper to smooth it out. The impeller seemed to make proper contact. I also changed the seal on the driveshaft. I do think I aligned the water inlet properly. If I blow through the "pee hole", ( insert random joke here)
I can hear it come out from the trim area. I am not letting it run longer than 15 seconds at a time so I do not damage the impeller.

Any ideas here? I am new at this. I would appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Rob the newbie

Were you getting water from the tell tale before? Are you sure the water tube made into the pump body? If in doubt, ALWAYS replace the pump housing ... pits are not acceptable.

What was the condition of the wear plate? Scoring is NG. How did you seal the pump body to the wear plate? Use hardening Permatex sparingly?

Re: Water pump not pumping

I am sure the water tube made it in. But I am going to recheck it tomorrow. The housing was pitted a bit but was smoothed out with sandpaper.( this was probably a mistake. The issue is I didn't want a plastic water pump housing. I wanted the thicker metal one. The wear plate looked new.

The pump was not flowing out the water holes when I got the motor either. I just got it this summer. The impeller was hard from sitting up. I did use the permatex brush on sealer lightly. I should have replaced the housing darn it. I just wanted to get it into the water by this weekend before school started. arggg.. I hate taking off the lower end. Looks like I am going to order a water pump kit..

How long does it take for the water pump to start flowing when you crank the motor up?

B4 you drop the lower end again, try putting ear muffs on it and running it. I too just helped a friend redo his impleller and it wasn't"peeing" upon startup. Found out that the lower end wasn't submerged in the tank deep enough to get the water into the pump housing. Was using same rubbermaid bin due to lower unit 's exsesivre lenght.
Put on the muffs and Whala!
Water must be over cavitation plate approx. 6".
Just a thought

Re: Water pump not pumping

I tried the muffs first... But they did not seal right. The inlets were just too wide. Water was spewing out. I guess I need a new bin or the square muffs.I have the lower end apart. There is very little wear on the impeller. It was bone dry as well. The impeller looked as if it was not seated to the very bottom of the driveshaft. Is that possible? What bin would fit the Force motor?

Also, How would I check for a clogged water passage?

Also, I used the Permatex gasket sealer. It said non-hardening on the back of the bottle.

Also, just to make sure. Where is the cavitation plate located?

:D

Re: Water pump not pumping

You mean the anti-ventilation plate . It's the flat plate just above the prop that runs the length of the gearcase.

Try to force water or compressed air into the water tube to make sure engine water passages are clear. If there's a tstat, take it out temporarily to see if water gets there.

Where was motor used, fresh or salt water? Salt water can leave packed up deposits in the block if not flushed after every use.

Also, make sure you have plenty of water to the pump frpom the hose.

Re: Water pump not pumping

It looks like it is a fresh water motor. Very little corrosion on the motor. I got a water pump housing today. I will try and flush the water passages. Good idea thanks.
