As posted in a deserted post.. i noticed oil from my 88 OMC outdrive on my boat a few weeks ago. Today i pulled out and checked oil level and color. it was full and not really milky white.. it was somewhat milky but yellowish color. Still smells like 80w oil.. I think the top check plug seal is bad>>> on a longshot I Am going to drain and fill tomarrow and replace the washer/seals on the plugs (3) i believe?? anything i should know or do ???? THANKS for any advice. I am hoping this will solve the problem. Will put back in and test for a week or so then pull out again. IF milky then --- i guess i really got problems.

If it's milky, it's water. Doesn't matter if it's white, gray, green (Merc), yellow, tan, brown, depends on the type oil used.
But, if it's milky, it's getting water in the drive, and probably forcing the gear lube out the front seal, into the bellows and then into the engine compartment.
You need to pull the drive, drain the oil, and do a pressure and vacuum check of the drive to locate the leak. It's the only way I can find leaks.
PS: I do very little work on OMC's but the same process is used on any type drive.

Thanks don... i assumed the drive was getting water.. didnt notice any in the bilge??? Do you think it would hurt to change the fill and drain screw seals and replace fluid and run for a week or so . then check again.?? I know when i winterized last fall the oil was the same color. And i ran probably 40 hrs like that. I would have hoped the mechanic doin the outdrive work in the winter would have went through the seals.

PS ... i found fishing line behind the prop>>> is this a problem??

fishing line only a problem if it took out the shaft seal.people who throw fishing line and plastic bags in the water keep marine mechanics much busier than they really need to be.

well i drained out oil.. not too bad. but the drain plug gasket was wasted.. rubber and torn.. so i replaced all 3 gaskets .. and filled. When finished, i pulled the fill hose out of fill hole and put plug in . some oil drained out then i put top plug back in. Is this the proper way to do it??? Thanks.. will run and check in a few days to see color or fluid, PLEASE let me know if i did this right

I hope you filled it from the fill hole that is right by the anti-ventilation plate on the lower unit (not the bottom drain like a merc) and that you got about 2 qts in it if it is a regular Cobra. Many of these have had the gears wiped out because they filled it wrong. The right way is to unscrew the dipstick in the top cover, place it in the hole, replace the drain (bottom most hole on lower unit) and then SLOWLY pump from the hole by the anti ventilation plate on the lower. Check wtih the dipstick, you should get 2 qts in there. Then replace(screw in) dipstick.

yes i filled from that hole (middle) and it took 2 quarts.. Now a new problem.. Just launched the boat and ran out to the end of the canal, and noticed the temp. up to 220 and turned right around and went back to my slip. It started running rough and ready to stall. Made it back and temp was gone back down to 180.. but still running really rough.. what now? did the seaweed at the launch ramp have something to do with this problem??? i am so p/oed cant even get to run the boat today >> HELP PLEASE
