Water diverter

Hello all been a while since I posted in this section. I have a 79 Evinrude 85hp model 84999R. The gasket between the water pasage cover and the head on the port side was leaking just below the lower spark plug quite badly. When I removed the cover three bolts broke in the head and are impossible to get out so I found a used head on Fleabay which is in the mail. This morining I was cleaning everything up and on the block I found a approximatly 2"long peice of small rubber tubing jammed in bellow and to the right of the lower cylinder. There is another one that looks like it is where it is supposed to be, between the two cylinders slightly off to the port side. Would this have caused overheating problems or other problem?

Re: Water diverter

Those water diverters are placed in specific locations to direct the cooling water flow around the cylinders. If one or more of these rubber hoses (diverters) gets out of position, it disrupts that water flow. A misplaced diverter can absolutely cause an overheat on one cylinder. The worst of it is that while that one cyl overheats, you may not get a hot horn indicating the overheat. Probably best to pull the opposite head to check the placement of those two diverters.

Also pay close attention to the water jacket cover. If it was leaking close to the spark plug, its likely warped. Very common in our climate due to frozen trapped water. If you get a cover with the replacement head, use the best of the two by checking them with a straight edge.
Also check the block for cracks while the head is off. This will also leak under the head....

Re: Water diverter

Thanks for the replys. I have a very small crack in the same spot as the photo petryshyn. I checked the jacket cover with a straight edge then cleaned it up on a piece of glass with fine sandpaper. It came out nice and flat.
Does any one have a phot of where the water diverter tube goes in the lower position?
Thanks again Glen

Re: Water diverter

If your block has that same crack as the above photo, you can save that block by having it aluminum welded. That is a typical freezing crack and is a not-critical area. Only problem is that you have to remove the powerhead...

Re: Water diverter

I have repaired several of those cracked blocks without removing the powerhead. If you are interested, I'm not far from Cold Lake.
