I always wondered why some folks call walleye
pickerel. her in western canada they are walleye.
I know that there are pickerel in eastern canada
redfin pickerel, grass pickerel & chain pickerel.
they are from the Esox family comonly known as pike. so how does "stizostedion vitreum" (walleye)
become known as pickerel to so many people ?

NOSLEEP,

Walleye are not pickerel.

Pickerel are of the pike family (Northern/Pickerel and Muskelunge.

The walleye/sauger/perch is NOT related.

I know what you mean about the mistaken identities.

I go to Ontario every summer, and the locals there call the Walleye "Pickeral", and they call the Northern Pike "Jacks". It's a regional thing, not an intentional misidentification. I don't care what they call em, as long as I'm catching them! :D

Moose, yep, agree.

Whenever I go to someplace I've never been. It takes me a couple of days to figure out what the heck they're talking about.

I wonder what fish has the most different regional names.

I have heard walleye called walleyed pike, pickerel, golden perch and dore.

I have heard micropterous salmoides (sp?) called largemouth bass, black bass, bucketmouth, green trout, and an occasional epithet.

Esox Lucius, northern pike, go by snake, gator trout or jack in many places; eastern chain pickerel are also called jacks and esox masquinongy (sp) are usually called musky or muskallunge spelled and pronounced many ways.

Other fish and or names? :)

Regional differences. Like Water fountain and bubbler.

I can say I fished Jackfish lake in Ontario near Vermillion and it was chocked full of Northerns. You could almost walk across them. Fun catching though even though most were small.

Around west-central Texas, the Stumpknocker is the Green Sunfish. Could yours also be a Green Sunfish? :)

The etymology of the word, "pike"
can be traced to a weapon used by
a large portion of the infantries
of the world prior to the advent of
firearms. The pike was a long wooden-shafted
pole with a sharpened head of iron.

anybody like pike to eat ?
we catch them to eat during winter, through
the ice when the water is very cold. the
meat becomes firm & deliciuos.they are great when deep fried in batter, or baked. I can hardly wait for the ice to become safe so i can start to fill my freezer.

No sleep. I like Pike, but the bones are a pain. I have heard rumor of a way to fillet them that leaves most of the bones out. Is that what you do? Never seen it.

scoop
there is a simple way to remove the Y bones
from pike after you fillet the fish.
once filleted you can run a knife along the back
were the Y bones are located and cut that portion away from the fillet. personaly i dont remove the Y bones i fell to much meat is waisted, and dont mind picking the bones out.

I believe in New Jersey thay call a walleye a pike-perch.

All the confusion extends to the meat market as well. Anyone know what a whitefish is?

I believe Whitefish is closely related to the coldwater Ciscoe.

The Jewish delicasy Gefilte fish is made of Pike and Carp.

Pike have also been referred to as the Speckled Wolf.

There must be many many more names for the Pike as they are distributed all across the Northern Hemisphere. I think the biggest catches are made in Scotland?
Pike can be filleted by a couple of methods that eliminate the y-bones but a strip of meat is removed as Nosleep says. Those strips can be used to make a soup stocks or cat food though ;) .

Re: Walleye or Pickerel

Try this the next time you do a Pike.

Run Filet through meat grinder one time or a short burst througn a blender. Next crush up some crackers, add some onion or your favorite spice ups and mix together. Make into patties and have with your eggs in the morning. It seems the smaller the Pike the tougher it is on the y-bones.
Anything under five lbs. I usualy make into patties.

Pickled Pike are great too. You cut your filet into chunks then add to ingredients only my Mother really knows. Jar for one month and all the bones disolve. Great with crackers while watching your favorite game.......
