Hi, I have a 1987 70 hp Johnson with VRO. I have replaced the VRO with a new unit, but still am not getting fuel through the pump. I connected the pump in the same manner as the old one, however I am the new owner of this boat and am not sure if the hose routing was correct to begin with. Would any one know where I could get a hose connection diagram. I just purchase a SELOC repair manual but it contains no diagram.

Welcome to iboats.

Those Selocs are only good for soaking up spilt oil. I would invest in a factory OEM Service manual. Check ebay or outboardbooks.com for a factory reprint. Did you prime the system after installation?

Exploded parts diagram here, follow the prompts to your particular model.

Look at the picture in the VRO link and the 4 hose fittings on the pump are identified clearly.

Re: Vro Hose Connection Diagram

Thank you. This information was exactly what needed. As it turns out, my original hose routing was incorrect. The link to the diagram cleared it all up. By the, would you happen to know how fast the engine should turn over during starter engagement. This thing acts like maybee the exhaust is clogged. With spark plugs removed the engine turns over freely, and spark is present. With spark plugs installed, the engine barley makes one revolution per starter surge, almost as if compression is too high for the starter. This boat sat, in the water for over 18 months before I took possesion. The lower unit is covered with algae and I wonder if this might cause a restriction in the exhaust. That said, I have achieved ignition one time for about a 4 second run time. Any ideas?

Re: Vro Hose Connection Diagram

it has to turn +-300 rpms for the motor to start.

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad
