ESSENTIAL DATA REQUIRED
When posting a question about propellers, you cannot get a reasonable answer unless you provide the following information in your post: Items 1-4 are essential for meaningful response to most questions.

1) Performance issue you are trying to correct:
Slow hole shot and worse with passengers or skiers, prop cavitation/ventilation in turns while on plane.

2) Current prop manufacturer, model, aluminum or stainless as a minimum:
Stainless and has Volvo Penta P/N on it 3855142

3) Current prop diameter and pitch (required): 14 ? x 20

4) Wide open throttle RPM and speed with an average load (very helpful):
4,500 WOT, 31-32 mpg via GPS, I had 5 adults totaling 825 lbs. & a ? tank of gas about 15 gallons when I got those numbers yesterday.

5) Engine/drive make, model, year, and HP: 1998 Volvo Penta 3.0L 130 hp, Cobra SX drive 1.97 ratio with a SE sport 300 hydrofoil installed.

6) Boat make model, year, length and weight: 1998 Regal LSR 1700, 17.5ft, 2000lbs not counting fuel, gear, and passengers.

I want to upgrade to the Solas HR Titan 4 or similar 4 bladed stainless prop. What size would I need converting from a 3 blade to 4 and to correct some of my poor holeshot?

Solas tech reps have been slowly helping but I knew there would be great advice on here and could expect a faster response.

Re: Volvo upgrade from a 3 to 4 blade

I think your numbers aren't quite right. As listed it indicates slip is over 28%.12% slip is more like high normal.
if we use 12% at 32mph rpm would be about 3800.
While your foil is probably helping your hole shot it is very likely steeling some of your top speed and may be increasing slip.
I sure would like to see your performance numbers lightly loaded without the foil don't worry about the holes.
Your setup is pretty normal but for the foil. Typically a 17-18 footer with a 3.0 runs a 20 or 21" good for speed and little else.
For hole shot with a load and Skiing usually about a 17" with the proviso to watch the rpm. and or perhaps a 4 blade.
Maybe you can rent or borrow a shop tach to help varify your tach.

I'll take the foil off this weekend and run it with just the wife and I and see what my numbers are and report back. I do have the original Faria tach but I've upgraded to a newer Faria tach this past fall but I'll use my timing light with a built in digital tach to verify before switching tachs. I did forget to mention the unusually high winds for the area. Historical data from yesterday:
Wind Speed 19 mph (NNE)
Max Wind Speed 24 mph
Max Gust Speed 32 mph
Visibility 9 miles
Might explain some of the 28% slip?

Probably not. Verify Tach. Very important. Garbage in, garbage out ;)

No current, right?

Some current. I was going up creek against the current when I did my WOT runs. I'll still verify the tach and try it with no foil this weekend to get the best info possible.

Then GPS is meaningless for prop selection unless you do back to back runs up and down river and then average the speeds. GPS speed is across the bottom, not the water ;)

Would seem you could check the speed of current by drifting.
But averaging a 2 way run will work.
Probably someplace on the lake with less wind.
Sometimes a little chop will be faster than glass smooth.

Looks like I'll be taking it to the lake this weekend to be as accurate as possible.

20" pitch is a bit much for a 3.0

My best holeshot with my 3.0 / 17' boat was 15" pitch, however I usually kept a 17 and 19 on board. 19 for cruising, 17 for tubing and skiing.

Scott, thanks for the info...I felt that it was a bit much and thats why I set out on this quest. The 20" pitch came on the boat. Did you ever use a 4 bladed prop on your 3.0?

Re: Volvo upgrade from a 3 to 4 blade

I had a 4 blade 21" that came with the boat. It couldnt generate any RPM's to get out of the hole and dogged the motor down to about 3000 RPM's.

both my props were stainless. the 17" pitch was an OMC prop that I picked up off of Craigslist for $50. the 19" pitch was a polished Solas prop.

Re: Volvo upgrade from a 3 to 4 blade

Once we have your new numbers we can tell better if your setup works and what prop is needed.
Usually going to a 4 blade you would decrease pitch.
A 4 blade should improve hole shot, improve slip.Should help get the bow up at speed, seem smoother and respond better around the dock. While a 4 blade usually costs a little speed With your specs I think it may improve speed.

Re: Volvo upgrade from a 3 to 4 blade

Scott, sounds like my 20" prop on it right now is doing the same as your 4 blade 21". It won’t rev past 3000rpm until it is up on plane and the hole shot is slow with only my wife and I and worse when I have a few friends on board.
Steele, a 4 blade stainless is what I am after for all the reasons you listed but the price point is high and the reason I want to try and get as close a possible with my numbers before I pull the trigger on one.
It's supposed to be nice all weekend so I should be able to get lots more info for you guys. I appreciate the help and info thus far.

Don't get hung up on that. They never reach WOT until up on plane and trimmed out. BTW, you should try and test with a typical load ;)

Re: Volvo upgrade from a 3 to 4 blade

I took the boat out this afternoon and figured out a couple things. Let me first start out by saying its hard for me to admit mistakes but I'm an idiot and made one...my Garmin has been set on knots instead of mph this whole time. Its probably been that way since I bought it a year ago. I also hooked up my Actron timing light and my tach reads about 150-200 rpm high. So with all that being said, the boat had a full tank, 2 adults and my 4 year old, ran 42.2 mph at 4550 on the timing light and 4700 on the tach. I think that puts my slip in the 4% range?! And my initial first run fully loaded would have been 36.8mph(32knots=36.825mph), 4350 rpm(corrected) and in the 12% slip range?!
