Volvo Tilt issues

I have a 99 Chaparral 1830 (4.3 GL 6 cyliner) and the tilt is popping fuses independent of trim switch position. Relays seem to check out ok. 15 amp fuse pops as soon as new one is installed. Manula says this shouel be a 15 amp fuse (have owned since new) It blew at boat ramp so I had to increase fuse size to 30 amp to get it to tilt up. It will go up and down with large fuse inline, but 15 amp fuse will not hold.

I assume this fuse is protecting the trim switch and since up and down work when hot wired--I have assumed I have a direct short in the red wire supplying 12 volt control voltage to the switch itself. How do I verify and how do I correct? Is this a common problem?

Puzzled

Re: Volvo Tilt issues

I would start checking connections and wiring in the trim harness.
Could be a relay. Pull both relays and see if the standard fuse blows. If not, install one relay. If it doesn't try the other. Do this on both relay connectors.
You might use a bunch of fuses, but it's an easy way to check, and cheaper than buying the relays which could be the problem if they are shorted internally.

Re: Volvo Tilt issues

Thanks Don,

I will try that. I used a meter yesterday and checked the relays 'mechanically' to see if they were 'continuous' across the posts they should be when the trim switch was raised or lowered for each respective relay. The relays are 'five posters'. Both relays matched for cross post continuity when trim switch was changed up/down/neutral without a fuse in place. I'll go get some more 15 amp fuses and see what happens as you suggest. Thanks again for the help. Will let you know.

Puzzled

Re: Volvo Tilt issues

Don,

Must have been water related because today I just replaced the fuse and all was well. Up/Down and relay swap didn't blow fuse either. Hope it stays that way. Guess I will find out next time I put it in the water.

Still Puzzled
