Volvo tamd41b overheating issue

Hi there. Just moved my new to me 38ft with twin Volvo tamd41b's to it's new marina. On the way everything seemed fine at around 2000rpm but as I increased revs the temp started creeping up on the port engine. As soon as I backed off the temp dropped quickly back to normal (on the gauge).

Once back checked coolant levels again and everything seemed fine. Has new impellers and heat exchangers cleaned already done before the trip.

Can anyone suggest what to look at next?

Not sure if it's pertinent but checked the hot water(which is run off that engine) and it was luke warm at best

Check water inlet casting on drive

Clear hose between raw water pump and HX, look for bubbles. If you see bubbles, you are sucking air

Forgot to mention it's on shafts.

Will check hose out this weekend. Do you mean bubbles in the inlet strainers? If so I'm guessing you mean while it's underway at higher speeds?

Any leak in the system before the raw water pump means the pumps suck air, which means the motor runs hot

Hi. What temperature did she creep up to ? We can take it from there. I’m fairly familiar with these engines of that sort. My old man has two tamd61’s. I’ve maintained them for about 17 years now Almost. A few things that fall into the suspect list for causing this. But tell me what you saw the temp reach first.

Thanks for replying mate. Temp looked to be sitting around 80c at 2000rpm. I pushed the revs up to 2800 and temp climbed to around 100c. To be honest it didn't look like rate of increase in temp was slowing down but as soon as I dropped revs down to 2100 the temp lowered almost as quick as the revs.
Perhaps I should of said the temp raised steadily rather than crepped up. It only took about 30 seconds for me to notice how hot it was getting.

Ok. 100 is getting too high. I’m surprised the alarm didn’t sound around there perhaps.
Can’t remember if you said earlier or not. Have you cleaned the coolers recently? How’s the cooling flow out the exhaust, compared to the other ? Is your coolant header tank cap ok and holding pressure as it should ? Any sign of coolant creeping out of that cap ? If that’s releasing pressure before it should, it can overheat. Is the sea strainer lid secure and not drawing air (very common issue).
Have a wee look at these first. See where we are.

Heat exchangers and impellers were done before I moved it and I have since checked the thermostats and they were good. The coolent header tank seems fine and it's holding pressure with no leaks noticed. I've put a clear house from the strainer to the water pump and couldn't see any air coming through, I wasn't really able to see flow rate of the water through it though.

Over the weekend I hooked up a pump and ran rydlyme through for 3 hours. It started with quite a low flow rate from the return hose and bubbled and frothed and at the end was flowing freely.

Haven't taken it for a run yet because the weather's been crap here. When I started it in the marina the engine temp warning light came on for 10 seconds and then went out if that means anything.

On that engine I believe you also have an oil cooler, an after cooler, and a power steering cooler to maintain. Not sure if your "heat exchangers" includes these. Your rydlyme treatment likely cleaned out some of the crud in anything you missed. Volvo maintenance is to clean these every three years or 800 hours.

Your comment about the temp warning light is concerning. Was the temperature gauge also reading high?

Temp gauge wasn't reading high. The light came on when started from cold (with no alarm beep) and went off after 10 seconds. It didn't come back on again when I ran out at the dock for 30min(temp sat around 65-70 °C)

I've spoken to the local Volvo service tech but they are going to struggle to get to it before Christmas as we're heading into the southern hemisphere summer down here and they're flat out.

I'd like to take it for a test run after the rydlyme but not sure if I should.
