Re: volvo penta starter

Take your socket to a bench grinder and remove some of the outer wall, that will give you some more room to play with

There are 3, 5/16ths cap screws holding that plate in place.......
Remove the bolts,+ the Plate......
Now you can R&R your Starter........
While you have the Plate in your hand,
Grind the "Finger", that was in your way, OFF......
Reinstall the Plate.......

Now, Next time the Starter goes out,
It'll be Much Easier to change...........

Sometimes it's easier to pull the engine.

I believe that Bondo is suggesting that you remove the plate in quetion. Then grind it before reinstallation. Not the whole engine. It should come out with ease after removing the few bolts holding it in.

Re: volvo penta starter

hello
if a thin walled snap on or homemade socket wont work I have had some sucess with them by using an air chisiel and a curvd chisiel and bending the cover away from the bolt head. some fit very tight
good luck and keep posting

Re: volvo penta starter

well after three hours and some scuffed up knuckles i still cant get the bolt off of there...i dont know if im really clear on this but the plate i am talking about is really a housing that is on the back side of the motor and the metal has got to be at least one half inch thick....so bending it out of the way is not an ooption....i found out that its the flywheel housing that is obstructing the bolt that i need to get off to replace the starter isnt that great???. ps if anyone here fixes boats in louisianna please let me know.

Re: volvo penta starter

I'm Sorry Tim,
I'm not a Volvo Guy regularly,
I've never had a problem with the Flywheel Housing on any motor I've ever worked on....
Most All Chevies have a little Tin Splash Plate, bolted to the forward face on the Flywheel Housing, that Always gets in the way on the inner Starter bolt...... Until you take it off,+ cut the Finger off it.......
The Problem you're having must be a Volvo thing.....

Re: volvo penta starter

after a couple of hours of grinding the flywheel housing and plate cover with a dremel tool and a cut off disk i finally had enough clearance to put a socket on to the bolt....i cant tell u guys how relieved i was when that bolt started to turn loose.....well since checking around reading the board here i knew the starter went bad bc of water sitting in the boat....is it difficult to pull the outdrive off to check the u joint and gimbal bearing?...or can i just loosen the bellow and see if there is water in it? is there also anything else i need to do while i have the drive off???

Don't Even Think About It......
If it Wasn't Leaking,
It Will after That..........

Pull the Drive.............. ;)
