Volvo penta gimble bearing...motor out?

I just got a 1984 Bayliner Siera 27' ("affordable" boating). The gimble bearing was slightly audible when I bought it and took it out of the water(the same week in Nov.). It just went back in and is loud in nuetral at idle; under way not too bad. I greased it, not much improvement. On this Volvo Penta I/O 260 can this bearing be replaced WITHOUT pulling the motor out?
Anything I can do before the bearing gives out to maybe get me through the season?
Thanks in advance for any and all help
Scott

Nope, you have to pull the engine. If it does lock up, it will spin the bearing inside the housing, then you have to buy a housing, and they aren't cheap at all.
Did you pull the upper gear box and check the ujoints and the bellows for water?

Ugh, not what I wanted to hear, but most appreciated. Much of the outdrive above the prop was "opened" during the servicing of it, though the bellows, as far as I know, wasn't checked for water. I'll speak to the technician next week. Thanks again, Don, for your info.

Not a surprise, being a marine tech, this time of year when the customer has to come to me with a problem, I seldom have the answer they were hopeing to hear.
