Volvo Penta 4.3 GL-A Cutting Out After Idling

I'm having an issue with my VP 4.3 Carbureted engine. It definitely is a fuel issue where the bowl is filled up in the carburetor but as soon as it is running for 3-5 minutes it shuts off as if its running out of fuel.

I have already replaced the Fuel Pump as well as rebuilt the Carburetor. It seems like the new fuel pump still may be the culprit since it seems to shut off at some point of time and not suck anymore fuel.

Fuel tank does not have any water, debris, etc. It was cleaned out and refilled with ethanol free gas. Fuel line and antisiphon valve were changed.

You are going to have to go over the wiring circuit including the relay for the electric fuel pump to track this one down. Look for corroded/overheated connections.

Do they offer replacements for corroded or overheated connections? How about the fuse holder if the connections there are corroded?

Anything man made can be remade. Terminals can be bought

Check the connection at the oil pressure switch that activate the fuel pump.
I’d also have a look at the automatic choke too.

If you shop carefully you can replace what’s there with better terminals such as Ancor Marine

Check the connection at the oil pressure switch that activate the fuel pump.
I’d also have a look at the automatic choke too.
Volvos don't use an oil pressure switch to activate the fuel pump. A terminal on the alternator activates the fuel pump.

This what activates the fuel pump




Follow the green wire. It goes to the L2 terminal of the alternator. If the L2 terminal isn't outputting 12V, your fuel pump won't operate while running.

I always carry a jumper with male spade connectors on it to jumper between pins 87 and 85 after pulling the fuel pump relay just in case the fuel pump relay fails or the alternator fails. You can also use one as a test to see if that fixes your issue...Then you can troubleshoot why the fuel pump relay isn't activating.

Fair play Bruce. Although I thought for some reason, that the ,gla was the exception to this. Not sure why I think that..unless it was a hybrid thing I’m thinking of previously

The OP switch is how Mercruiser and aftermarket installations wire in the electric pump. I think Volvo used a diode and voltage from the alt to achieve the same end.
