I have a Volvo AQ125 mated to a 270 Outdrive. When I put it in reverse the out drive lifts up almost out of the water. Any thoughts on how to fix this? I am very new to outdrives.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Volvo Outdrive Reverse Problem

First make sure the mechanical tilt and lift has been raised up. This means the tilt shaft is retracked all the way up. It must be up for the reverse lock to work. Pick up the outdrive by hand and let it drop down to latch into the reverse lock. If you can pull it up the reverse lock assembly needs to be repaired. I hope this will help you. Good luck. E-mail me at jmontgom@gulftel.com if you still have problems.

Re: Volvo Outdrive Reverse Problem

I was hoping that I could try to do this with the boat inthe water. Once I raise the outdrive all the way up I can't lift it manually.... it's up as far as it can go. I guess my next step is to take the boat out of the water and take a good look at the outdrive so that I can see the reverse lock mechnism.

Re: Volvo Outdrive Reverse Problem

As gene70 suggested, if the mech. tilt rod is not fully retracted then the locking mechanism will not engage. If the locking mechanism if at fault then I suggest a good manual as they are complicated to repair without an 'exploded' diagram to follow, also the outdrive 270 outdrive should lift and lower by hand easily (with tilt retracted)if it doesnt then yoyu probably have siezed or worn pivot bushes - it should raise all the way up to when the dipstick touches the rubber bump stop.
