Volvo MS3A questions

Hi there,

I have a Volvo Penta MS3A transmission sitting here that has some shifting problems. After reading up on it, I believe that the cone clutch is either glazed or worn. I have the manual for the MS3C, but the A is somewhat different I believe. I can not, for the life of me get the top nut off. On the MS3C it is left-hand threaded, is it the same on the A? Also, is there a way to lock the gears? The biggest problem is to actually hold down the transmission while trying to loosen the nut.

Also, I have read the some of the cone clutches are from other gearboxes, including OMS, are interchangeable, is that true? This gearbox has a brass cone.

Thanks in advance for the help. It is greatly appreciated!!!

Kind regards
Philipp

Re: Volvo MS3A questions

Yes, it's a left handed thread.

What engine is the A on? I know of an MS3, a 3B and a 3C, just never a 3A.

Personally, I never heard a cone from any other company would fit any Volvo transmission or drive. That cone clutch section of the transmission is similar to the sterndrives upper gear box.
They did change cone material on later drives, but other things changed as well. Stick with the correct parts if you want it to work correctly.
