Re: Volvo ISP

I've read about it, but it's nothing anyone is going to replace an outdrive with. By design, they must be used in twin engine applications and the hull must be specially designed to accept them. At present they are only for boats in the 37' to 50' range.<br /><br /> <br />IPS Product Bulletin <br /><br /> Volvo Penta IPS system<br /><br /> Tiarra yachts with IPS system <br /><br />

Re: Volvo ISP

Am I the only one wondering what those 2 ANGLED drive units do to the boats " normal " turning at high speeds ? They also will lift the rear of the boat at speed as they are FOILS. Now I know why they only can go in big barges and must be in pairs.

Re: Volvo ISP

Doesn't hurt a thing, read the articles it explains all about it.<br />"Big Barges"? Well, they are almost 8 feet long and weight aroung 2000 lbs each.<br />They were designed to be an option to straight shafts and rudders.<br />All the ones that have run them think they are great, so not sure your concerns will hold water.

There was a very good write up on these in our last NZ Boating Magazine.<br />Its an interesting variation and looks like it has a lot of benefit if it is set up and installed as designed.<br />Peter

As with all things there will be pros and cons. But I for one like the idea that Volvo are trying to move things forward. If I could afford them Id certainly have a look.

Don, I meant the size of the boats. A sharp turn of 12,000# plus is not affected muuch by one drive straight down and the other almost horizontal. It may actually improve the sharp turn by banking the boat to a better lean in angle.

Re: Volvo ISP

The sluggish spinning in a circle is to be expected as there is no turning torque from the drive that is in foward. That is a feature of contra rotating props. Docking in current and wind will be different with a +or- maximum of 16 degrees of turn at slow speeds. I think the report may be in error about that small angle.

Go to this link, <br /> http://www.volvo.com/group/global/en-gb/customercases/penta_ips/ <br />Then click on the "Volvo Penta IPS promotion" link, watch the vidio's also, all of your questions are answered, including why it works better. There is a lot of information there to answer your concerns, but you have to read and click on the different links.
