I have checked/set the timing on my Volvo AQ130C 4 cylinder engine a few times but one thing has always bothered me. At what angle or position should you be looking at the timing marks on the pulley while checking/setting the timing? I can see them from several different angles and each angle provides a slightly different reading so I'm always wondering if I have the timing set correctly or not. The boat runs fine, but I have had some minor, high-speed pinging at sea-level in the past, which is why I would like to be sure I am setting the timing exactly correct.

Thanks!

You should be looking at it in such a way that you are looking straight at the mark on the block and then to the mark on the balancer. Also the pinging could be caused by your carb setup as well, you can set a carb to run better at different elevations due to O2 content. You might also think about adjusting the air/fuel mixture on your carb.
Later,
