I have a 96 Maxum with 5.7, thunderbolt IV (i believe). The boat runs and starts fine but the voltmeter is erratic between 11-14 volts. When I turn the key on its at 11 and once started its bounces between 12-13.5. 3,000 rpm in gear and it 12.2. Sometimes it settles to 13.5 (normal) at idle in neutral but not consistantly.

This all started last year went an extended period of listening to the radio, I attempted to restart the motor. Totally dead. Nothing..no click nothing. I wiggled some wires and flipped all the elec. switches. Turn the key and started. I have since checked/cleaned all the grounds to the block I could find.

As a precaution I replaced the battery this season but I the voltmeter is still all over the place. The altenator is a 817119-2 and about $200. What is the best way to test the charging system?

Any help appreciated.

Buy a handheld voltmeter and check your voltage with that. Dont trust the guage. It could very well be that the regulator in your alternator is damged but you won't know until you check it with a meter.
