years ago I was crappie fishin w my girlfriend at local resivior, sitting on the large riprap near a bridge beside the boat ramps.we were across the channel from the ramps 200yrds or so.ramp kinda busy.7/10 people back a brand new tall, 25+ cabin cruiser type boat down and take about 25 mins to launch.it was obvious they had very little if any exp.with any size boat.they finnally go to leave and plow as bad as possible away from the ramp and under the bridge.small boaters fishing near us yelled at the captain to slow down but he was oblivious.we had to move up the rocks to avoid 3/4' wake!about 20 mins later boat comes back and circles around in front of ramp,a little slower this time, still to much wake.a guy is standing on the bow probly 6/7 ft above the water.they turn and head for the Rip rap about 50' from us and dont really slow down!!I think the guy thought his boat had brakes!he hits the riprap w a sound like thunder pitching the rider onto the riprap and nearly running him over as the big boat rode up the slope!!it slid back into the water.they pick up the bleeding injured stuntman and they turn to go back to the ramp. it was full/crowded and as they circled the boat started to list!!it became apparent to the crew it was sinking fast. only smart thing they did that day was beach it on the sandy shore beside the ramp!can you top that!

Re: Virgin boat owner

Reminds me of the day I was fishing a bass tournament on Lake Minnetonnka. I was casting at a point when a huge houseboat pulled up right beside me, and an idiot with a bullhorn yelled down from the top deck, probably 10 feet up, "How's fishing?"

That was about a gazillion years ago when you could still fish a tournament in a 20 hp flat bottomed boat. Big cruiser pulled under the St. Alban's bay bridge at plow speed and washed me up onto the rip-rap. Glad I had some bath tub caulk with me, and a 1 1/4 inch bilge pump.

My eyes hurt from reading that. Question: What is a "rip rap"?

It's shoreline erosion control, like shoreline breakwater. Blocks or boulders lining the shoreline several feet up out of the water so boneheads like the ones described don't erode the shoreline away.

Re: Virgin boat owner

This riprap runs all the way to the top of the slopes around bridges and elevated roadbeds at this lake.the water can rise or fall up to 20' or so in this flood control resevior. The riprap is a great fish structure because of the holes and algae and the rocks heat the surrounding water earlier than earth banks in the spring when its cold.I would not try to land any boat on it though!maybe a plastic canoe but its dangerous just to walk on it as all the rocks are not stable and may shift under your weight, fall and its gonna hurt and youll probably bleed alot!then have to limp back up to the top.I think the guy who fell off the boat broke his arm or wrist and his knees were bleeding.

A lot of the rip rap around here is granite scrap from the quarries in St. Cloud. It's hard, and it's sharp.

I found out many years ago that the rip rap you walk on , is many times the roof to some snakes house.

Re: Virgin boat owner

Riprap is perfect ambush cover for fish and snakes.ive seen snakes every 5 yrds or less sometimes and once one grabbed my white curlytail jig when I dangled it in front of him,3' watersnake, he let go quickly.another time right at dark ,below a big spillway w lots of dead fish, a Huge rat popped out 3' from me!as big as a large muskrat! I decided to go home soon and stood up the rest of the time!!You should really stay off Riprap at night especially on slopes and dont drink alot either in daylight. I think the larger sizes are safer to traverse, less loose ones that move or roll under your weight. If its wet,and algaes on it you will fall down almost certainly if you try to walk on it, its slicker than a minnows peter.Much safer to fish it from a boat!but from the shore you can keep the bait parallel to the slope better and fish the edge of the water or top of the submerged slope w the entire retrieve easyer than being offshore in a boat.

Re: Virgin boat owner

Somewhere I am sure I still have a photo I took maybe 35 years ago of a BIG cruiser, maybe 45 or 50 foot, COMPLETELY out of the water on a long point of riprap, with about a three foot HOLE in its bottom. I don't know how fast he was going when he hit that concrete, but it had to be pretty fast. The boat was there for a couple weeks, I'm guessing they had to bring in a big barge with a really big crane to get it off.

stic88, a friend from West bygod Virginia, uttered that phrase years ago after slipping on some freshly scraped wet hard red clay and landing on his A** on a constuction/grading site we were working on!!.a "minners petter" is pretty slippery, like a slugs butt!!around N.C. I think its "slipperyer than a fish stick"!!!

From what I gather here at the lake, rip rap is also better than sea walls, since the wakes don't get bounced out to create the "washing machine" effect off shore.

Sorry, mommicked:redface:

walls are vertical.and will return wakes or waves more than a 45 degree riprap covered or hard slope.what does the enter key do?
