Reading the Ventilation requirements of most states boating laws is like reading a foreign language. Does anyone have enough experience or insite into what exactally is required?

I have a 14 foot john boat with a 6hp outboard. Someone has put decks in the boat and the portable 3 gallon gas can sets under a trap door in the back deck. There appears to be no current ventilation set up right now, is it required?

Thanks, Stone

Re: Ventilation?

I dont really know the law on that, but if your gas tank is under a deck, then it should be ventilated, especially if you have a battery down there too. If not, fumes will build because there are fumes escaping the tank through the tanks vent. One spark and you go boom. I know that it is required on permanant mount tanks, and on I/O's but I really dont know on your boat.

Re: Ventilation?

Yours is kind of an unusual situation in that portable tanks are usually out in the open air. I believe I'd provide some kind of ventilation to keep fumes from building up. The tank does vent and it could be very dangerous.
