Velvet drive 72c with gear reduction submerged. Will water get into it?

It was totally submerged for a day.
If water gets in, can I suck it out thru the large fill plug?
What oil and how much for these trans?

Looking at the front of the trans on the left side down low is the trans cooler connection. Remove the line and drain unless you see a drain plug.

If trans is mounted to V-drive look at bottom of casing.

Dexron trans fluid or any hydraulic oil which meets C-3 oil specifications

Fill, run, drain repeat a couple times or until oil coming out looks clean

Check fill by running till it gets good a warmed up. Shut motor down and immediately check level at dipstick. Do not give it much time for cooler to drain back. Best with 2 people.

Once level is found correct, give it several hours to drain back. Pull dip stick and scribe a mark on it so can check it at beginning of the day

Yes, does have a side hose cooler line.
It is an inline, and the older rear bearing style from 1970.
Fill is an actual large pipe plug with a dipstick attached
Has a 2.9 to 1 type gear reduction unit.
With trans angles down due to engine angle, does a drain get out most of the water?

Most but not all I would think
Anything lower then where it's draining can hold water. Could put a suction line in where its draining.

Pulled dipsticks today on both trans and level was perfect. Oil is clear.
Next few days will run motors and put into gear and see if fluid stays clear.
I drained 5 gallons of river water from both engines, sucked water from cylinders using a vacuum, and sprayed in PB Blaster. Today cranked over engines and everything is good compression on these v8's. River water came up to exhaust manifold level and somehow leaked into the engine that way which surprised me. Must not have a perfect seal manifold to heads. Or maybe it came into motors by way of the exhaust tubing to the risers.

Started up starboard engine. Engine fine, trans runs fine. Oil not milky.
Trans even though submerged did not leak in any water. It has a small vent on top with a loose cap and somehow it worked well to keep out the water.

Can't imagine it has a spring pressure valve in there, anyone know? A spring 2 way valve that is normally closed but pressure opens it to vent or suction opens it to vent type idea, like an EPA gas cap on a car tank.

Don't know for sure but most Trans are set up to only vent out if pressure gets to great
