Hello. I am replacing the seals in the lower unit of my 1978 Johnson 115hp. My question is about the football shaped magnet spring. When I unscrewed the shift rod and pulled it out I heard something in the gearbox and when I took off the cover I retrieved the spring magnet. Does that thing just "float" around in there to catch metal filings? My seal kit should be arriving tomorrow and I am not sure where to put this thing. I have read the factory manual and it doesn't mention the magnet or even show it on the diagrams. I did find it on the diagrams on crowleymarine.com, but it just shows the part next to the top of gearcase. There's nothing as to the orientation and I don't want to mess anything up. I've sunk a lot of money into maintaining this old motor already, lol!

These magnets were used in the sterndrive electric shift lower units.--And in your outboard.-----Just put it somewhere so it does not interfere with shift function.------Part #380375.----

Thank You so much! And for such a quick response. I may be able to finish this today, after all
