Well I thought my outboard was well on its way.... but found out today they dropped it off the pallet during shipping(from 5 feet up) so now Im in the market for another. Any know a good place online to buy used outboards? Or does anyone here have one for sale? Im looking in the 150-250 hp range.
Thanks,
Bigdog

Unless you are very lucky, e-bay is a lot more expensive

I dont see how you can say ebay or anywhere else is more exspensive... 5,000-7,000 here VS 1500-200 elsewhere????? Thats a big chunk of change...

Re: Used outboards.....

bigdog, iboats sells late model motors, with a warranty. They are a reputable company to do business with. Also convenient shopping. No hunting the classifieds and going to look at trashy motors.

If you are looking for an older used motor, I would look locally before doing ebay. Then if using ebay, try to stick with established merchants. Good luck on any sight unseen mechanical purchase on ebay, they are all as is sales.

Motors are expensive, but you get what you pay for. Good Luck.

I bought a small motor on Ebay from Lawndale, California. When I opened the box I knew right away it was a salt corroded piece of junk. I put in in the trash. I bought another one from someone on this board and had to file a police report and Federal Mail Fraud claim to get him to ship the motor.
Buy from a reputable dealer or something you can inspect before paying.

I couldn't agree more with the responses. My first choice would be one locally that I could inspect and run. Second choice would be from a business that's got reasons to keep you satisfied and stay in business themselves.

Sea Horse,

Be careful. Let's not give folks the wrong idea. You cannot compare the "individual" you bought the engine from on this board with the outboards offered through iboats. That sale you mentioned was not an iboats sponsored sale.

This is a free service chat board.

The outboards offered in the iboats outboard listings are quality checked, warranted and backed by various dealers.

No comparison.

Re: Used outboards.....

I have bought 3 outboards off of Ebay and never had a problem. I have sold all 3 and made money on them. Ebay is an excellent place to buy an outboard (under 20 Hp), but I do not have experience with the bigger motors.

Re: Used outboards.....

bigdog...
Just a suggestion, for buying any used motor (or for that matter any used mechanical device) if you do not have the ability to see it first hand...

Request the seller to make it available for an inspection by a locally authorized service center for the manufacturer in question.

If he/she refuses, look elsewhere...

If they agree, then you want to insist that you pay for this inspection service, and be sure to set it up such that YOU get the report of condition DIRECTLY from the service center. (you may share these results with the seller afterwards, but the reason YOU WANT to pay for this service is that the information is then YOURS, to use as you see fit.)

You will find that it's WELL worth the $75-$200 (depending on what depth inspection you ask them to perform) to have it looked over by a qualified service center...

While this is no replacement for a warranty, as pointed out in other reponses about the iboats motors, you will at least be able to weed out the absolute JUNK that some shady characters may be attempting to pass off as a "good".

Good Luck... I would only buy an OB sight-unseen if it was so
dirt cheap that I could afford the loss. you can
always part out a motor, but you may not re-coup
all $ you paid. keep looking, there's deals in
your own backyard eventually.
