I'm going to look at a 2002 Nissan 40D2 that's for sale this weekend. If you were inspecting this engine for purchase what tips do you have for me? I'm not much of a mechanic. This engine will be run on a hose in the guys driveway. I just don't want to buy a piece of junk. Thanks, John

When I check the gear oil, can I check it without draining it? Maybe just stick a pipe cleaner down the top hole or do I need to see more oil? I'm looking for evidence of water right? milky=bad

Can I get a compression checker from an automotive store? Any favorite brands or features? Cost?

Thanks

Loosen the bottom fill screw just enough to get out a drop or two of the oil/gooey metal bits/water that is within the gearcase. All your trying to do at this point is to determine if the lower unit has been leaking or has a mechanical failure. Any el cheapo compression gauge will do.
