I have just aquired a new project, very tatty boat that came free with lots of water inside..... what I need to know is where to start with the engine, both the engine & drive are a unknown quantity at the moment and I wouldnt be suprised if they are a throw away job, however, the boat was aquired legaly by the marina 2 years ago as the owner done a bunk owing £4500 mooring fees, I know the engine has not been started for 5 yrs but was known to be running fine beforehand. the sump has been submersed, and also the starter (partially) in rainwater. Would be obliged if someone could give me some idea of where to start with regard to initial checks, pouring slimey stuff down the potts etc etc.
Regards
Neil

Neil,
Find a Seloc manual soon.
Check for oil contamination in the oil pan, see if you can turn the motor over by hand through a couple of turns. Use the front crank bolt to turn it with.
Pull the spark plugs and squirt some engine oil down the holes. Not much required 4 or 5 pumps of an oil can may be enough.
If it turns over ok then drain the oil and refill with fresh oil. Lift the valve cover off the engine and refill the oil by pouring it over all the valve gear.
Remove the starter and have it checked out if you suspect it has water inside it.
After this point you can check out the rest of the electrical and fuel systems (drain and clean out carby)and if all looks well see if you can possibly try to start it.
Make sure that the outdrive is in some water at this point as you will need to have some coolant flow. Dont panic too much about the raw water pump until you can get the engine runing.
The raw water pump will need to be overhauled anyway as the impellor and seals will probably be US by now but you can still try to start up your engine at this point.

Good luck,

Peter

Yep, no problem. Leave the leg in the down position, connect the muffs - you're good to go. Don't raise the RPM's much past idle though, keep it under 1000. I usually remove the prop - it's safer and you can check for fishing line at the same time.

Aldo

Hi there
If it hasnt been tampered with there could be a plate on the side of the engine with the engine model and s/no as well as the stern leg model # stamped on it.

You also need to plug the bottom water inlet hole on the leg or you will suck air when using the muffs.

Good luck

Peter

Gosh Neil, you seem to be a magnet for troublesome engines. First a 470 style Merc, now a Volvo rubber band (Timing Belt) engine. :p

Here is some info on your engine. AQ-145A

Curiousity got me looking at the PDF, I noticed the gas recomendation says 90 octane. I don't know about Europe, but not too many fuel docks in the US carry it. Just a comment...

Neil
If you can't open it from the links given, emailing isn't going to help. You have the security settings on your computer setup to prevent that type file from opening. Even with an email it would either prevent it from being opened or not allow it to download.
Check your security settings or any blocking/firewall/or ad type software settings.

Right again don, disabled firewall and got it.

Ok, had anaother look at this engine yesterday, put a spanner on the front crank and could not budge it.... the plugs have been left out and i pumped approx a pint of water from the sump prior to the sludge coming out, Think the boat could do with a slightly bigger engine as well, so will be looking round for something else to fit, however does any body know what engines will mate with the 280 leg and bell housing? I was thinking of a aq171.....what do you think?

With that engine, you will need another Volvo engine to fit the bellhousing.
Changing to possibly a V8 or V6 is going to require a different gear ratio, and trying to find an exhaust Y to fit the bellhousing.
Best to start looking for another engine if that one is locked up.

The 171 has the same gear ratio in the drive, but it's a 6 cylinder engine, do you have room for it?
I also have no idea if the exhaust will line up or not or if the bellhousing will fit.
