I was wondering how to test the various parts of the electrical system on my 5 hp 1990 2 stroke. specifically the capacitor charging coil, the trigger coi, and the CDI unit. thanks

Re: troubleshooting electrical components

maybe i am missing something but all these parts seem to be called 3 different things. I have a white coil that has a red/black and white wire that came from under the flywheel. I have a black coil that leads to the spark plug and a black box with 6 wires( red/white, white, black/yellow, black/red, black and brown. could you clarify what these are called?

Re: troubleshooting electrical components

You really need a service manual. It shows what each part it, how they are wired together, wire colors, and all the tests (not just ohms test) of all the units.
The CDI unit cannot be checked with an ohm meter.

BTW, what is your actual problem with the motor?????
