Looking at a 2007 trophy 1703 center console boat. It has a mercury 125 2stroke in good shape. I have a yamaha 90hp 2 stroke year 2003 in excellent shape. I'm thinking of buying the boat and swapping over to the yamaha. I grew up with yamaha and prefer them over mercury. Anyone think this is a bad idea? Will I lose a noticeable amount of power going from mercury 125 to yamaha 90? Thanks

Sounds like you are a yamaha nerd ( good for you ) losing power from a 125 to a 90, yes. This is totally your call. JMO

Yes, you will loose power, but not that much unless your a speed freak. A number of years back I bought an 18' boat wuth an 85 hp motor, already owned a 70 hp in excellent condition. Trusted my 70 over the unkown 85 even though it ran well. All said and done, I lost almost two mph....wopee, went from 34 down to 32 mph....the trust in my 70 was well worth 2 mph...

Gee, why not run the Merc for a season and see how it goes. If you don't like it you can always switchover. 35HP is a lot to give up for snobbiness. The boat may wallow with the smaller motor.

You will lose a bunch of power in that switch. The 3 cylinder 90 Yamaha is not a powerhouse by any means. Is this a 3 or 4 cylinder 125 hp? If it is a 4 cylinder it is a 2+2 motor which has its own quirks but is an excellent motor. If it is a 3 cylinder 125 that makes it an opiti max which is a DI motor. I owned the 2+2 125 and the Yamaha 90 hp. Both good motors but I always go for the most hp.
