Hello to all! I have a 19' Sabrecraft with a 150hp Merc outboard. My family and I love to fish, so I would like to get a trolling motor. Problem is, I haven't the first clue what size to get. I've been looking at three different motors: a 5.5 hp Johnson, a 9 hp Evinrude, and a 4 hp model made by Chrysler way back when. I'm not sure what hp would be best... any advice would be greatly appreciated!

-Steve in Idaho

Steve,

Forget the Chrysler.

With your size boat, I'd go with the 9.9 Evin.

I go with the 15 Johnson or Evinrude in a two stroke. Same motor as the 9.9 with a bigger carb. My 15 will troll so slow that lures will not work right. I have the high thrust prop which backs 3 times as fast.
In the 4 stroke I leaning toward the Honda 20 to replace the 15 Johnson I have now on my 21 foot aluminum runabout.

Re: Trolling motor selection

So I take it, based on what's been said so far, for a 19' fiberglass boat I want a 9+ hp trolling motor?

-Steve in Idaho
